Move to NYC 2 and a half years ago to get a job in investment banking

>Move to NYC 2 and a half years ago to get a job in investment banking
>Went to Canadian university so don't have any cred to get an M&A analyst position
>Nearly run out of funds
>Keep applying to jobs
>Got a financial editor job for 45k, life starts to pick up a little
>Get laid off after 6 months from an acquisition and being a relatively new hire, can't find any other job for another 3 months
>Get shitty internship that pays $10/hr, decide to live with it
>Get a call from a recruiting agency telling me there's a boutique investment bank looking for an entry level analyst
>Freak out as this is my first chance at investment banking after living in NYC for about a year.
>Fuck up on phone interview.
>Internship ends
>Got a call from another recruiter about some shitty business analyst job for an insurance company, so depressed about what happened I decide to take the interview anyway and got the job and make about 70k/year
>Determined not to drift too far away from finance and get into investment banking
>Bought a ton of books on M&A and study the shit out of em everyday after work
>Start looking for M&A analyst jobs in NY, they're scarce and I never get any call backs.
>Found one M&A analyst position that would be perfect, call up the recruiter and find out that it's the same company that I interviewed with a year prior. Asked if I could get a second interview since it's been a year and was rejected.

tl;dr: How can I get into investment banking? It's seems like it's impossible to find an entry level position.

I don't want to get stuck at my current company.

Post your resume without personal information.

I removed a lot of points and formatting for this pic. Formatting doesn't look like this at all when I submit to companies.

I don't know how, I'm not a wagecuck.

Can you tell how did you fuck up in the interview? I'm going to have an interview soon and dont want to screw this. Also your resume looks pretty good m8

I work at JPM in IBD on the east coast and I'll tell what stands out to me about your resume:

>3.5/4.0 is not at 'A' average
>add more info about your study-abroad program like what skills you learned (really beef it up)
>put more emphasis on the fact that you can speak Japanese
>again, more details about the "stock broker" position you held
>add more technical skills and be detailed about how each skill would make you a better candidate for the job you're applying for than your average applicant
>your extracurriculars look mundane as shit, add some shit about skydiving, surfing, or snowboarding then add some shit about prestigious clubs in cities that you don't think HR will look into

All in all, not a bad resume but it looks like a 6/10 for summer analyst interns who are still in undergrad. You need to work on that resume and work on your interview skills as well as phone skills. Maybe start working out and going out a little more while talking to more women to try and boost your confidence. Also, network with alumni from your college and call up past co-workers to see if they want to get coffee or catch up then use them to try and get a job but don't be blatant about it. Good luck kid, wish I could help you more.

In all honesty it was from a lack of preparedness. Basically I fucked up due to 2 questions.

One was a calculation questions starting from a particular piece of data, and the other was reasoning/situation as to why you'd use one metric over another.

I was able to answer every other question the interviewer asked.

Also when it came time for me to ask questions, I may not have asked in-depth enough questions because I was just nervous as shit after fucking up the 2 questions.

Thanks but I don't think it is otherwise I'd be able to at least get one or two call backs.

Thanks for the input man, really appreciate it.

I tried networking with past alumni but nothing came of it. All my friends and co-workers don't have any connections to people that work in IB.

I even tried calling up boutiques banks but the secretaries were difficult and whenever it I did get through it wouldn't go too far.

What specific jobs are you applying for?

Nobody cares about your retarded scholarship

Look up resume templates. This one looks like shit.

Nobody cares that you were a customer service rep either.

It should be a given and expected that you are fluent in English. By even mentioning that you are, it looks as though English is not your native language.

You should list skills very last and not specify whether they are technical or language.

Imagine a 4x4 bullet point matrix (without lines). Use as many buzzwords and desirable skills as you can. You sure has hell have more skills than what you included in your technical skills.

e.g.

Skills:

>Fluent in Japanese (Mention this first and LIST THAT YOU ARE FLUENT! Odds are there isn't a single japanese person working at the company let alone going to interview you, nobody knows what the hell "JLPT Level 2" is, if they ask during your interview be sure to tell them this but them seeing the time you spent in Japan alone should validate fluency).
>Fluent in French
>Rapid language aquisition skills
>etc

2,
>Financial Modeling
>(FINACIAL MODELING SOFTWARE 1) mastery
>(FINACIAL MODELING SOFTWARE 2) mastery
>Strong Excel Skills (never underestimate how useful this is even on an IB resume)

I use search terms like "M&A Analyst" and "Investment Banking Analyst".

I search those in sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, Selby Jennings, etc... and look for postings that describe boutique IBs and are entry level.

I thought it was good because a lot of postings ask for high GPA students.

The customer service rep was to help validate the Japanese language skills (I removed the bullet points while taking out information to post here). I'll fix up the skills portion right now.

Thanks for the input!

You're welcome.

Good luck with IB, you're going to need it (40-50% of all male employees in IB tend to be Jewish and if you are not Jewish you need to work extra hard to get in).

I learned about that working my previous jobs in NYC. Particularly the stock brokering job and some cash advance stuff I did before prior to the editor job.

Its impersonal. Employers are much more likely to hire if they like you and can relate to you.

Include your favourite alcoholic beverage and pornographic film

In all seriousness? Go get your MBA. You're too late to get an analyst position this year -- almost all banks have already finished up recruiting and won't restart their efforts until August. On top of that, they usually just do campus recruiting. Unless you know somebody, it's incredibly unlikely your resume will be picked from the stack that piles up through their general website application portal.

Now, if you were getting your MBA at a school that investment banks target, you have a MUCH better shot at landing an Associate position. You already seem to have a background in M&A and finance, so you should be okay there once you have the reputation of a good MBA program on your resume.

First step? Start studying for the GMAT. It's honestly not THAT hard, and if you spend 3-6 months studying, you can probably get a 700+ (which is at/above the median of schools like Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, etc.).

Now you probably won't get into the top 5 schools (not a slant on you, it's just hard), but even getting into the top 20 puts you in a SIGNIFICANTLY better spot. And of course, the closer the school is to NYC, the better.

NYU is probably your perfect candidate. Its median GPA is 3.55 and its median GMAT is a 710. Get that GMAT score, get some solid recommendations, and fix up your resume.

Doing all of these things will set you up nicely for IB in NYC. It also wouldn't hurt to change your last name to something Jewish. Dead serious.

Three people recommend acquiring a Jewish name. Assuming legal name change and total revamping of identity, will employers be able to see old traces of your name anywhere?

> undergraduate summer interns

Does anyone take people the summer after freshman year? It's all "at least 4 semesters" this, "6 semesters" that oy gevalt.

They'll most likely take it as face value once it's legal. Unless your OBVIOUSLY not Jewish i.e. Black, Hispanic, Asian or just an obvious not Jewish white

I'm Persian but at Jewish frat parties I get mistaken for one of their far-flung Sephardics idk will it pay off in the end?

Jewish Persians are incredibly common, especially in LA. As long as your first name is American, you'll be fine.

Depending on how arab sounding your name is, you might just want to spare yourself the trouble, keep your name, and indicate on your resume somewhere that you've volunteered for some kind of Jewish charity/foundation/temple.

How about my status as a pledged brother in AEPi, the global Jewish fraternity? Great parties btw if you ever attend.

Also I go to a state school in Virginia (W&M) - does proximity matter THAT much?

Goys like you are amazing, thank you so much. How is your life/career going currently and where would you like to be a decade from today?

HAHAHAHA

That sounds alright -- you might need to find an extra way to emphasize that its Jewish.

Not a Jew, nor am I still in IB. The pay is shit in BB (bonuses are only going down, and you're paid a salary to work ungodly hours), and MM is far too dudebro. Botique is okay, but it lacks prestige, which is the only reason I wanted to do IB in the first place.

Most people want to work a BB analyst job (that they hate) just so they can land a PE/VC job in 2-3 years, but the odds of ending up in a firm that's prestigious and pays as well is slim.

Currently I'm applying to get into a T14 law school. My goal is to become an M&A attorney and jew the jews as they pay me by the hour to help them complete their deals. Aside from that, I'm using some spare capital to trade stock options.

Salam, Persian-bro. The other dude is right, you can fake being a Persian Jew (literally thousands of them in LA) as long as you don't have an obvious Islamic name like Mohammed or Hassan or Reza. There is usually no way to tell apart Jewish Iranians from the Muslims unless you start hanging out with them a lot.

Here's the invite for the official Veeky Forumsdiscord if anyone's interested.

You make 70k a year faggot, unless you spend like 50k on that New York apartment rent, count your blessings, in time you'll find something.

Holy hell salam, never expected to find another Persian here. You in IB?

Seems like a solid base - spare capital before you even hit law school is amazing. You got a partner/kids situation going yet or is that still for a future time?

Never having a child.

I do have a girlfriend. We share very similar goals and are (fortunately) matched intellectually. We enjoy the finer things in life, like money and power.

Man Armani am Vali 17 sal to Iran budam. And no, I do software engineering so most of the time I'm on the client side of IB. Currently looking for investors to fund our 20,000 user strong software company.

See thisHobbies? Favorite anime?

>oh look its a generic boring CV of a gaijin weeb again

You can try Mcdonalds. They're always hiring.

Agreed. It is very dry and doesnt convey any character or personality

I'm gonna look into an MBA. Was putting it off as I thought I'd get stuck in some sort of purgatory because I'd have no IB experience going in. Also cost as I'm almost done paying off my undergrad debt and I'd be going right back into debt again.

I was always told to leave that kind of stuff out unless it's related to the job I'm applying for

Any suggestions?

>t.

When will people learn to write resumes. This is total shit. You have way tooooo many positions considering you only graduated in 2014. Focus on the ones in your industry and beef those up. Reduce the clubs section.

After reading this, I get zero sense of what kind of personality you have except that you are probably a dumb weeb who had mediocre skills

this. holy shit OP is an entitled cunt. i hope you end up on the streets.

>mentions Japanese
Are you stupid?

I would in no sense ever hire someone who fucking dares to mention Japanese on their resume. Means they are a fucking weeaboo loser, normal people don't learn Japanese.

> We enjoy the finer things in life, like money and power.

>money and power
>posts on Veeky Forums

Fucking autist.

Thanks for the input. I'm gonna redo my resume from scratch.

I count my blessings everyday. It's just that I don't want to spend too much time outside what I actually want to go into and then be deemed be told "well why didn't you try to get a job in the field" by HR.

Pretty much the only reason I have my current job and got an interview for an M&A position once is because I can actually use Japanese at a business level. Everyone is learning languages like European languages so those skills are a dime a dozen, I've never been contacted for a job because I can speak French. The difference between a week and I is that I can actually speak/read/write Japanese rather than some stupid anime buzzwords.

I didn't suggest that at all. They will know you are not a Jew simply by how you look, act, and speak.

I was only pointing out the obvious.

>70k
>in NYC

Higher Taxes. Transportation costs are absurd. Rent is exorbitant. OP likely has student loans that continue to accrue interest and ideally should be paid off.

He probably makes enough just to survive and that's it. There is no potential for growth or quality of life with that income in NY.

>thinks Veeky Forums is real life.

my are you an optimist!

Pretty much.

I haven't calculated taxes exactly but they're a little over 30% of gross. Transportation cost are about $220 for NYC subway pass for the month NJ train pass. Student loans are $260, but I'm paying at $500 to knock em out quicker (especially since CAD/USD is in my favor). Health insurance costs about $600 a month (retarded I know but it's the only option my employer would give me since I live in NY and work in NJ). Rent is $1620/month for a studio (gonna have a friend move in so I can half it).

My goal is just to focus on career right now

Japan is a poor man's South Korea

you need to do more internship work and do you have any certificates in finance?

way too many positions.

u cant hold down a proper job can you you weaboo? - is the thought that a reader could have.

ok why are you looking for a finance analyst job if you majored in IB?
take out the irrelevant work experience
take out the trainee position
take out exchange student
tl:dr you make your self sound weak

are you joking? japanese is one of the most hardest languages to learn. if you know that shit it shows youre dedicated. despite having interest in it. just because we're on a Veeky Forums doesnt mean that all japanese people are weeabos.

lol south korea are more poor compared to japan have you ever dug your head out of your ass.

>majority of classes in Japanese

Give away that you're a cheating know nothing cunt

Jesus fuck this resume is so much better than mine

Ill never be in IB

>power and money
Fucking lold

no, it just means you are an anime fag.

wallstreetoasis.com could definitely help, also i think being in M&A IB is incredibly boring if you don't have a lot of dealflow, i could be wrong though

Yeah, a recruiter once told me that it's quiet when deals aren't coming in but when there is a deal you can expect 80-hour work weeks and shit.

As someone who has been in the IB the last 7 years(all bulge bracket banks) in NYC....

You need to put Excel on your resume.

Thanks for the input. In the process of redo the whole thing.

Since you're also in NYC, would you be open to meeting up? Or if you looking someone that can fetch your coffee in exchange for teaching them about the industry.

Add all types of M&A analysis (Comparative Company, DCF, etc...) to skill list

Thanks for the input. Will do.

What's your job title? I've been in ibd for 5 years and I just made MD last quarter. Feels nice to be getting that "fuck you" money.

MBA is your best bet
