I like to use annihilation charge and lance. start combat by popping annihilation, then charge in, then use lance on targets in your annihilation AoE to get biotic combos. also learn what squadmates abilities prime combo's and keep watch for that.

But does the game set up in a way that side quests will disappear if you go to far into the main quests?
Also, if you do, do they give some kind of warning that you're about to go past the point of no return?

There are no classes in this game, you basically build your own and can use multiple classes per playthrough.

Do you really only get 3 abilities at a time? I remember a gameplay trailer that showed you could switch between 4 sets of 3 while in combat.

1. Yes, only three can be hot-keyed at any one time.

2. You can, just open the skill menu and click another profile.
