It used to not be a thing you could really do, at all. Drive an old 4 speed an you need all of those gears. Now gears really exist more as a convenience than a necessity. New engines make so much fucking power and sports cars are so light that they have enough torque to overcome the start, and after that you're really good to go. When I drove a C6 I would just start in second, it literally didn't matter, and didn't lug the engine at all.
