USSR was weak at the moment Germany attacked thanks to the great purge, but was building up. We can't now for sure Stalin would attack in the end but it was a strong possibility, and Barbarossa was not doomed from the start.

Something like 4 million soldiers which was the largest invasion force in history. Stalin didnt even believe it when he first got reports of it, and even after they actually invaded.

Because Stalin moved the Soviet lines to the border with Germany, with orders to construct a new defensive line their while abandoning the Stalin Line further inland. And because Hitler moved everything West to attack France once Poland was secure, that was his plan all along and the purpose of Molotov-Ribbentrop in the first place, to avoid a war on two fronts.

That's exactly why he turned back east and attacked in 1941, he couldn't afford to wait for the USSR and the USA to be ready to fight him.
