Abysmal translation. Here's George Long's version:

It's both better on its own AND literally much closer to the Greek original which speaks of good/nobleness (agathos) rather than strength and keeps the metaphor of digging towards the spring within.

Agreed. Anyone who unironically used this is a complete moron. The saying is obviously sophistic and stupid. Polonius is a blowhard who says dumb stuff.

On further reflection and really does warp the intended meaning, as the "look" is intended in the sense of "search for" (the Greek original uses the metaphor of "digging" throughout) instead of mere observation.

In effect the philosopher's call for continuous soul-searching in pursuit of moral self-improvement becomes something which can easily be mistaken for a call for navel gazing in search of self-esteem.

Truly awful.
