Watching 'Das Boot', and the Captain spends half of his time pissed as fuck with Hitler.

What happened in the battle of the Atlantic? Was the German leadership incompetent or were the allies just too good?

The Germans focused on submarine warfare simply because they could not take on the Royal Navy in WW1 and WW2. It was this fact that made them so innovative in both wars. There's a great quote at the start of the documentary The Great War with a German Admiral saying a War with the Royal Navy would last 7 days I'm tried to source it.

You know rightly why he was so critical of Hitler... so the film could get made but it is totally within Character he's a crotchety old sea Captain in a miserable environment and a horrendously high mortality job (although not an undesirable one, they were paid well and had good food guaranteed, recruitment was surprisingly fine).

The Kriegsmarine even though it held out even after surrender wasn't very politically Nazi. Hitler complained repeatedly that he has a Nazi SS, A prussian Army and a Jewish Kriegsmarine... another quote I'm lazily failing to source but they did have lots of Jewish personnel compared to the other services. That at a massive stretch could be relevant to the thread.

More likely is that sailors are nutters and submariners notoriously doubly so. It's completely within stereotype for them to hate the government and literally everything else that isn't old Naval stories and the weather report.

Royal Navy got their shit together and started to get really good at ASW that the U-Boat crews never stood a chance at 1942 onwards.

Just another edgy "I'm one of the cool Germans who hated hitler" attempt.

If you watch any German ww2 movie, you never see a single hitlerite but that's bullshit, about 50% of the people after the war just hated him cause he lost; Hannah reitsch said as much. The reich enjoyed popular support for most of its existence.

Franco fucked it all up by refusing to let the axis use Gibraltar as a base which would have BTFO the eternal anglo immediately

Franco was a really dumb fuck

There is a hitlerite in Das Boot and he gets made fun of for being a naive idealistic cunt
Truth is, the average soldier couldn't give a fuck about nazi party. They just wanted to defend their fatherland against bolsheviks and capitalists and avenge the WW1 defeat

>getting involved into a major war just after you have finished fighting a deadly civil war
nigga was smart as fuck
There was literally no reason for him to join Axis because he knew there was a slim chance for them to succeed. Look what happened to Mussolini

This thread is going an fortunate direction but you can't really define Nazism clearer than your last sentence.

The German submarine arm had a higher casualty rate than the Japanese kamikaze arm, and that is still true if you only count Kamikazes that actually took off to attack their objective

>They just wanted to defend their fatherland against bolsheviks and capitalists and avenge the WW1 defeat

So they were nazis then? Because "le bolsheviks and (((capitalists))) are coming for you" is classic Nazi idiocy

>muh apolitical wehrmacht

Just because someone believes in one aspect of an ideology doesn't mean they have to believe in the entire ideology.

Franco survived well after WW2 despite starting out as a reactionary friend of fascists. He did a smart as fuck move.

The real answer is that you could get a pro german soldier in WW2 movie.

However most germans themselves were very protective and proud of their country...but they werent necessarily nazis.

The last free election before hitler's rise he got 43% of the vote. A commanding majority in their system but this was literally a few days AFTER a communist set the Bundestag on fire. During most of the 20s the party didnt even qualify for the Reichstag and usually had around 20% of the vote.

There were of course other conservative elements they worked with but those werent nazis.

Was also very clever to get rid of the hotheads via the Blue Division

"I have a National Socialist Luftwaffe, Conservative Heer and a Socialist Kriegsmarine."

Is that why the most they ever got in a democratic election was 40 something percent?

Franco was told by Canaris to resist all attempts by Hitler to intervene. Canaris hated Hitler enough to lose the war.

Commieboos can't accept the fact that the National Socialists only received 1/3rd of the popular support, or that Hindenburg appointed Hitler because he was legally obliged to.

They don't generally understand elections.

>Implying having a second Italy around would be decisive, or even all that helpful.

STEM happened.
The allies had better RADAR, SONAR, computers and mathematicians.

A uboat is just a very slow defenceless metal tube once you know its location.

>Watching 'Das Boot', and the Captain spends half of his time pissed as fuck with Hitler.

There is a series on the history channel that talks about it:

And the Captain was probably pissed off at Hitler because he thought Hitler was losing the war against these guys:

The real end was May 1943. From then on the U-Boats were more prey than predator.

I believw the quote is "nazi air force, conservative army, communist navy"

you dummy
people could be full blown nazis but still feel that hitler was starting to lose it.
unrestricted submarine warfare with extreme mortality, the destruction of the 6th army and the useless bombing campaigns all were things most people involved would find fucking stupid

They'd be justifiably pissed off just as the Sixth Army at Stalingrad grew cynical and contemptuous of Hitler. Freezing to death in Russia, forbidden to retreat or surrender, resorting to cannibalism all while listening to German radio broadcast Christmas tales of their heroic sacrifice as if they were already dead.

What happened in the Atlantic was essentially happening everywhere. A continued sacrific for what most could see was a lost cause. A betrayal of the German people, those who had given most being used as scapegoats. Just look at the Nero decree.
