Le fantasy vs believable aside, pre 1066 is just not how CK2 is supposed to be played.
Post 1066 has fully formed kingdoms in Poland, Hungary, France, England, Scotland, these kingdoms you can attempt to diplomatically marry into and form personal unions, without war, which is wha makes this game unique and interesting.
Pre 1066 is just a bunch of illogical and arbitrary blobs caused by a broken gavelkind mechanic tearing Europe apart.
Only retards and plebs play pre 1066.

Reconquest is 25% AE versus Conquest 100% and you don't need to spend so much admin as early.
In my current WC run I was able to annex most of Muslim land without getting a single Coalition. Also you should abuse truces. Just keep cycling truces with all the people around you so they can't even form a coalition. Bascially what I did is hit persia, then go for europe, then egypt, then the steppes and just keep repeating.
