Used 911 for 20K as my 2nd car. First manual car

Used 911 for 20K as my 2nd car. First manual car.

Good idea or just a money pit?

It's a great idea if you think it's a great idea.

Do what you want to do man.

Do your research, pull the trigger.

You knew the answer to your question before you even typed it. The truth is that we know nothing about this car that would lead us to one educated guess over another. What you're really seeking is encouragement and to be absolved of guilt from what may be a costly mistake. You want someone to tell you that, for better or worse, it will all be worth it.

It will all be worth it user.

Id get it a pre purchase inspection done on a car like that.

isn't this what everyone wants on some level?

We all want to be told we're doing the right thing, that what we're doing has merit, and that someone cares. We all want to be accepted, somewhere.

This.

Get ready to put some money into it.

Make sure the output bearing or water pump bearing, or whatever that problem was on these engines is taken care of.

Otherwise, buy the car the makes you feel something. A car like this is an emotional decision. Nothing wrong with that. No one buys a 911 out of practicality. Do it, already.

>Good idea or just a money pit?
Why not both?

i can help you if you are willing to listen. made this decision last feb.

10qt oil changes, must be done very regularly
Engine work at least once a year, expect to replace the clutch just so you have an excuse to work on something else that seems to be designed to fail out of warranty. Porsche is what happens when you replace engineers with idea guys and senior engineers with bean counters.
"Fuck you" handling in low traction conditions no matter how fancy your tires are

IMS bearings - look that shit up before you buy. Only safe 996 is the turbo.

If you've got the money to keep up with the maintenance, sure. Otherwise just get a used BMW.

This has been a nice thread. good work, anons

You do you OP, but it sounds like a blast to me.

Are you ok with the fact a 14 year old girl has a better car than you will ever own?

>hardtop cabriolet

Dats bready gey user

Good idea in my eyes

It's a fun, zippy little car. Maintenence won't be as brutal as say a 944 or any other German car of that age, this was the time where large reliability improvements were put into play with German cars like this. But that doesn't mean maintenence will be non existent, so prepare to have to poor a bit of money into it

I M S B

Holy fuck why do people like you are always looking to ruin your lives buy buying a fuckexpensive piece of shit machine.

With 20k you can travel more than comfortably around the world for two years.

as long as anything is rust-free and clean, it'll be a car you can love even if you have to dump thousands to replacing parts

i don't know why I even bother to be into cars in Ontario.

IMS bearing

Yeah, calling shenanigans.

10k+ oil changes unless you track it, engines are perfectly fine other than the IMS (which is solvable with a single clutch change while you're at it), handle great in low traction condition if you know how to drive.

Go sperg out in your AE86 while us adults talk about cars, please.

And GT2/GT3/GT3 RS, and any car with a few miles on it already because if it was going to fail, it'd have done so already...
It's a problem, a very serious one if it happens, but some people make it sound like every single 996/986 will blow its engine before hitting 100k, which is hugely overblown.

Yeah, you replace the worn bearing, but what of the bearing shavings? Filters do not catch all and bypass valves exist. Porsche engines with IMS problems are known to just up and fucking die from oil contamination.

Porsche's engineers, while doubtlessly brilliant at designing driving dynamics, are not very good at the, uh, actual engineering. Millions of engines designed across human history, and these guys can't get an IMS bearing right.

Possibly because you can pay porsche to service your engine for you....

Bearing shavings? The whole IMS bearing problem exists in the first place because the bearing on one side of the engine, the one prone to failure, is sealed, so it's lubricated by its own grease rather than the actual engine oil. This grease can dry out over time and fuck up the timing, introducing 24 valves to 6 pistons and grenading the engine in the process.

Parroting my dad here. The metal could have been from something else related to bearing failure.

I know the engine have oiling issues under high cornering G-forces, but that can be fixed with a baffled sump.
There's also bore scoring and the occasional catastrophic cylinder wall failure ("D-chunk") but those are relatively uncommon. Never heard of metal shavings clogging everything up though.

Haven't all the IMS bearings been fixed/blown engines replaced by now? It's been ~20 years after all

Also I just found this lel
Updating older 911s to look like the current model has been a tradition since the 80s, but most attempts end up in uncanny valley

Low mileage garage queens are still risky buys.

They're actually pretty reliable with any issues being well documented. See pic related in regards to the IMS issue.

Obviously you want to fin a car in good condition that was taken care of. That and learn to do maintenance yourself, labor charges for these cars is stupidly over priced.

Some user here bought a 996 C4 Cab for $13k and it has treated him well

>bus rider

Just don't buy them
>$18k forna 1997 Boxster
Like why bother?

Pay an independent specialist to conduct a pre-purchase inspection. It'll save a you a lot of potential trouble (and expensive repairs).

I know, right? You can get a fucking loaded late model 986 S for that, or a base 987.

Thanks for the info!

Seems half as bad, and owning a 20 year old luxury/sports car just comes with cost attached to it.

The only thing I dislike about the 996 is the dashboard and interior. It's pretty good for the 90s, but the 60s/80s hybrid and the upright windscreen you get in the 964 is just a nicer place to be imho.

a proper set of dials and floor mounted pedals are neat, too.

>tfw my mother bought her 964 just before the price spike and I can't afford one now
>good knows when the prices will go back to a normal level, if ever

The 996's base interior looks and feels cheaper than other generations, but it's still very well put together and the ergonomics are top tier.
And there were still a couple of very cool options, like the full leather interior (which covered EVERY surface in leather) and the body color-matched center console.

The interiors look like ass on both cars. However they both hold up over decades and don't really fall apart

That wheel is an abomination. The rest of the interior is fine, though.

Do it.
Porsches are built to last. Less of "money pit" than a Cuckcedes assuming it is in good condition.

It's a little too close to the dashboard for some, I never had a problem with that.
Size and thickness are just right since the steering isn't as quick as in modern cars, what's your problem with it?

The number and angle of the spokes.

What the fuck you think you can live off of let alone travel off 10k a year?? Wtf do you mean comfortably, 10k a year won't even cover food and shelter let alone anything fucjing comfortable.

He probably wants to live out of something like this and eat grass

>build to last
Sure, but spare parts might be expensive. I'm not an expert so i won't say anything about whether 911 is the money pit or not, but it's possible for a car to be a money pit even if it's rugged - through spare parts availability/price.

that being said: if i could afford 911, i would get 911. as long as 20k isn't total sum of live savings of the guy, he will surely be able to afford some broken suspension part from time to time.

wow, travel, so cool
why the fuck should i even want to travel anywhere except to nurburgring? and for the ring, it's nice to have 911. It's kinda annoying how every hip and trendy modern facebook guy just assumes that everyone will enjoy travelling

To be frank I find that gorgeous.

They're not all that expensive for most bits. After a year and a half of owning my boxster and looking into various part prices, the most expensive thing I've seen is the litronic headlights, and anything "race car"-y like GT3 seats and shit

The litronics list at like 1800 a side, and the GT3 seats, well, I don't want to talk about it, frankly.

Litronics are definitely an option you should look for anyway, they make the car look much better and as you said, putting them on later is expensive.

I like the increased visibility myself, but I prefer the orange tipped headlights myself.

Also, in case one ever gets into an accident and you need a quick headlight replacement, the halogen headlight assembly is the same as the litronics

So you can just throw a halogen one in there as a temporary measure until you can get another litronic. The plugs are the same, so it's completely functional. In fact, other than the auto leveling system being disabled, you don't actually have to do anything to use litronics in a halogen car!

It sucks and looks stupid, but it's what I did until mine came in, and while I'm waiting to get my new fender painted.

>myself myself myself

I'm retarded and tired, please excuse.

I'd rather a 2007 or 2008 Cayman s desu

by "second car" do you mean you have another car you can use, or this is the second car you've ever owned and would be your only car?
if it's the former, go for it, they're a blast to drive, but I wouldn't want to be caught without a backup

Thats because it is.

Porsche was having financial woes at the time and had to cut costs.

However, 911s have never been about plush interiors. I kind of like it desu. Its simple and doesn't have the modern bs that just weighs down modern cars.

The automatics in these cars are complete trash though. Don't waste your time.

People that own Porsche's treat them with kid gloves. I have no doubts that any used Porsche is a good bet. Enjoy!

If this is such a good idea, why doesn't everyone do it?

Because most people don't have $20k to spend on a car
People that buy $20k cars new only put a few grand down and finance the rest, you can't do that with an old car
