It's a boy racer's wet dream. Its value is artificially inflated by hype, especially thanks to the F&F movies. It was a great car when it came out, but performance-wise its nothing special compared to modern cars. And the rice-tax makes it kinda dumb to buy for any reason other than to sell it for more/collecting. The 2JZ was pretty great back in the day, but now its not the only engine around that can take a ton of boost and make big power on stock internals. In fact there are plenty of cheaper and more practical options available now. Its a decent car that's aged well but the usual asking price makes it a stupid car to buy.

I've seen this happen with other shit as well, OKO carbs are taiwanese keihin PWK knockoffs, but then the chinese did a knockoff of the OKO which is a knockoff of the PWK, oko parts work in legit keihin carbs, but the chinese knockoffs of the knockoff are so bad they don't interchange correctly with anything.

It's value is based on rarity and original MSRP and the aftermarket tunability. It was expensive before the FnF movies, it was expensive after. Only a child thinks the supra wasn't expensive before the FnF.
The supra was $50,400 MSRP in 98. For hte turbo. That is a $77k car in todays money. They can be had for $30k for normal ones and up for modified ones. So the car is right in line for what it is. You aren't buying a viper for $10k, why would hte supra go for that low?

They only sold about 6,600 turbo supras. And they only sold 11k of all kinds during its run (MKIV). The supra is priced exactly where it should be.

The reason a 300zx TT (very similar performance) is so much cheaper is because they sold nearly 90k of them.

Easily the best car I've ever driven and it is my dream car.
Unfortunately the car does get overhyped by people who don't actually know anything about them other than "muh 2jz". Whilst they are very tunable, they are not cheap to tune (after BPU anyway). They also do not run 1000hp on stock internals like some youtube kiddies like to claim. The car can very cheaply gain over 100hp from stock, but from there on it isn't much cheaper than tuning any other car for higher power.

Please keep in mind that almost all of these comments from supra fanboys you see, are not from people who actually drive them.

I mean, you can add 100whp to a WRX with a turboback exhaust, some TGV deletes, an intercooler + charge pipe. The difference is that the WRX is probably on the knife's edge as far as blowing a rod, spinning a bearing, toasting the clutch, etc. at that point. The Supra, OTOH, came from an era when companies like Toyota overbuilt the shit out of stuff to handle all the conditions that could possibly ever happen.

Exhaust and a boost controller is essentially what the BPU is for the supra which will produce over 400hp easily. Cams are said to give you a good 20 if you get them changed out. If you have the steel turbos like the US/Euro models do then you can put the boost up a little more. You''ll see some decent numbers for a decent price, much beyond this can be costly if you want it done right though.

Oh of course it can, which i think is fantastic.A couple of people I know were running up to 700hp on a stock engine (although one guy just killed his) It's just that there is a fair few people out there that believe you can slap on a big fat turbo and go drag racing.

the real answer of course is that it's not the best car, but (at aussie prices at least) it's the BEST tuner car for that amount of money.

It's also a great platform. RWD, shit tons of downforce and a great drivetrain.

The Supra is one of my favorite cars, but it's not for any reason involving infinite power or whatever, and I'm a firm believer that the people who overhype it ignorantly, and the people who hate it ignorantly are equally cancer all around.

I think it's a great car, many disagree for reasons I believe to be contrarian because of its popular status, but, that's fine, I'm still going to love it.
