What happens when you boost the v8?
Race motors were until recently typically NA because running a motor at full load at 8k rpm for an hour reliably is hard enough without doubling or more the amount of energy in each piston stroke.
Think about how differently high revving motors like the F20 in the S2000 or the S54 in the E46 M3 are different than a gasoline turbo motor. Gas turbos give you way more low to midrange punch typically - this is why Ford can power a Focus with a 1.0l motor and it not be dogshit slow. Turbos are chosen carefully for the desired application... too big and it will spool too slowly (not as big of a deal for a car that spends its time north of 5k but for a city driven car it will be ill-suited. Too small and although you will get a nice flat torque curve down low, it will run out of steam when higher airflow volumes are required at high rpm.
A compressor map shows the efficiency range of the turbo... if it spins too fast it can blow up or heat the air too much.
Turbos mean a shitload of extra heat and thermal loading and that affects long term reliability and you can see that in a race car doubling the specific output with a turbo when it is already pretty stressed isn't easy to do.
