Even in PVE I'm left doing a backstab animation while whatever I'm trying to backstab dances around me and calls me a faggot. Fucking Friede is near impossible to backstab with anything bigger than a straight sword

Try Lucatiel's mask. Looks pretty nice with Vilhelm's poncho and has a certain roguishnes to it.

What are your stats? I had nearly 30 int by that fight and I think i was hitting them for 300 to 500 or so.

Why brag about cheating to win ?

At the start you should backstab/parry as much as you can with the mail breaker and save your spells for bosses/tougher enemies. Once you get Yoel it becomes much easier to kill mobs with Soul Greatsword, Heretic's Staff + Orbeck's spells will carry you all the way through the game until you can get the Court Sorcerer staff. Level INT and attunement before any other stat. GSA -> GHSA combo kills most PvE enemies before they even aggro. Buy a straightsword and twohand it for crystal sage/deacons. By the time you get to aldrich you should have some pyromancies so use those.
