Car aesthetics didn't take off until 1980.
In the 50's, and 60's there were a handful of good looking cars. But 99% of cars on the road were absolute trash that had absolutely no aesthetic design put into them.
In the 70's the Europeans started the design wave which eventually trickled down to the gooks and lards. With the aid of computer design and manufacturing automation and advanced techniques we were able to finally take design liberties with cars.
Regulation has done absolutely nothing but stunt and distort car design aesthetic.
Look at the Hurican and compare it to it's predecessors. The frontal area crash safety has taken a huge toll on its design language.
