The +2/+2 triggers even if you didn't have any cards to discard. Venemous pucewyrm can grow to be a big boy.

But you're right, the wording isn't clear. Look at Judge of Retribution for example. It says banish a target THEN draw a card, yet the card draw happens whether or not you banished anything.

It worded right, you banish first and then draw a card. If it worded to "draw if banish" they'd write: "Banish enemy follower with 3 defense or less, if you do, draw a card"

I also noticed all these casters have a huge amount of facial moles, indicating flawed genetics.
