Depends. Big fat vehicles with high load capacity tend to have a 1st low and 1st high, 2nd low 2nd high etc. Throw in an ultra low and some 4wd only ratios and there we go.

It's pretty common on heavy trucks. Small powerband+heavy load and you will need 10+ gears.

My Truck for example has 22gears forward and 11 gears backward. Most of the time I use 16 forward and 4 backward. With that much gears you can always drive economic.
