That's the point, Echoes is a JRPG/SRPG hybrid. Those battles are supposed to feel like little encounters or mini-battles. If you criticize Gaiden/Echoes fine, but at least try to comprehend what type of game it is first.

I just put Wings of Mercy and Breath of Life on her, and it combines incredibly well with her Owl-tome.

I really like that Echoes has some smaller villains like Berkut, Fernand, Slayde etc. who have somewhat of a presence throughout the game and actually fight you, instead of you just mowing randos down while Garon and Iago cackle in the throne room like retards until it's time to kill them.

I can dump all my units into the center of the map and I'll win. There's no strategy involved, no clever way to utilize the way the map has been designed. It's an absolute snoozefest, and I have not had fun at all so far. Currently on act 2 where you need to rescue three characters from pirates, and you can't even talk to them to recruit them, you can only get them all if no one dies (which, again, is only possible if you rush them, and which you should, because enemies only do 1 or 2 damage to you)

The maps pick up right away on Alm's side in chapter 3, and halfway through Celica's side, at least on Hard Mode.

There's still some strategy involved in that fight because you can't dawdle on the pirates storming your ship, you have to get to Valbar fast before he rushes Grieth and before Leon fucking dies. You have to make sure you're killing everyone optimally. Also 1-2 damage? Are you playing on Normal?

You haven't played Echoes. Only a few maps are like that.

Honestly, the worst thing about Echoes is that boss units on the map send out minions that track you down and drag you into skirmishes. I don't fucking want to do a skirmish on a map I already beat, and if I wanted to grind, I'd just hit up one of the dungeons. Literally no reason for this to be a thing except to waste your time.

The pool of useful skills in C is pretty specific. If you insist on not running a cavalry buff, then just run a threaten X debuff, with X being whatever benefits the team you are using him on.
