Necessity depends on the vehicle, but in general it's good practice. Some newer ones actually won't start without the brake engaged.

My car will still lunge with the brake up. Don't think it needs adjustment though. Clutch should always be in while starting the car though.

Jesus Christ you are some autistic special fuckwits, you do not need the brake to start the car unless it's programmed that way. The reason you should hold the brakes no matter what you drive to start the car is mechanical failure and safety. Something could be wrong and why take the chance, in a manual your e brake could give out and that happens a lot more then people think, on a automatic it could be stuck in gear or even be tucked in a loose condition when you start the car. No other reason for the brakes at start up besides preventing being a dick and plowing someone else's property or small children with your shit car.

Quick lean down and I see the rusty brake lines finally went. Customer claimed I broke it as his brakes were fine and stopped before coming in.
