It really depends on your motivation and ability to memorize a lot of stuff. For me, it was about 4 years of studying 2-3 hours a week just to get the basics but I never have had a particularly good memory.

I'm still heavily reliant on kanji dictionaries but I excuse it by noting that kanji+kana is just about the worst system of writing still in wide use today.
