The original may have been ugly, but at least it was unique and recognizable. Plus they didn't do anything about the interior, making it look even more out of place in the now bland car.

Absolutely this. The old nose cone was a popular target for simple, affordable visual customization. Now you'd have to replace the entire bumper. Also the new one looks like it's simply missing something, it's not what you've come to expect a car to look like. The old one was appealing because it simply blended in with other cars instead of standing out like a special snowflake.

The new one just screams "we COULD'VE put a grille here, but we DIDN'T because we don't NEED ONE because this car is ELECTRIC and therefore its driver is MORALLY SUPERIOR to you"

I feared that Tesla would eventually go down the same route as the Prius and other environmentally conscious cars. The first Prius looked like a Corolla of some sort, but then it gained a snide moral superiority, too, and now it's looking completely out of control.

The transition from E39 5 series to E60 5 series was the ugliest "upgrade" ever.

Also current Honda Pilot compared to the boxy one. Current one sucks so bad.

The E39 was so subtle and perfect.

The shape of the headlights is a bit weird and the pre-facelift front bumper is too soft, for sure.
The rest of the body has some real nice and clean lines though.

but really it's more about the e39 being one of the best looking cars ever made and whatever comes after it can't really live up to it
sort of like the transition from the db9 to the db11
the db11 looks beautiful but it's not as striking as the db9 did when it came out
the e60 looks good on its own merit but when you compare it to the e39,it's a bit lackluster

well it still stood out. the problem with the grille-less design isn't the lack of a grille, but the fact that it's designed to emphasize the lack of a grille.

it's not hard to design a grilleless car. hell, most supercars these days have no grille becqause most have the engine in the back. So it's not like designing a car without a grille in the gront is hard, even within regulations.

In FACT, if you took the pre-facelift Model S, and just painted the black fake grille red, and removed it's chrome trim, it would look pretty good.

The back of the new R8 looks fantastic, but goddamn did they fuck up the front.
And they split up the side blades, which were another major defining feature of the R8.
