So how does this whole league thing work exactly? Is it just setting up AI with custom names or are there actually players playing?

It is played on coach mode. The actual matches are played by the AI, but the tactics, player conditions, formations, subs, mid-game changes, etc are made by the manager.

There are, however, autopilot teams that get their shit set up for them and may have a pastebin with instructions on what to do in different scenarios, but nobody actually manages them.
