Why are modern cars with the exception of some muscle cars so ugly?

The old one looked boring and generic, like a ripoff Ferrari.
The new one looks striking, unique and beautiful, like a game-changing supercar of the future should.

and constrained by the same physics and technology limitations
things that are common place in thinking now were once uncommon and unobvious
so if someone has already solved the problem why not copy that work
the only thing you gain by inventing your own implementation is better understanding the process of creation that led to that point

It's unfair to say all modern cars are ugly. I still like the look of some Porsche's, as well as some corvette models. To be fair though, porsche has kept the same general design on it's cars throughout the years. Dodge has also made some good looking cars, although I'm not sure if the charger can be considered a muscle car or not.

The 718 is just simplistic beauty. The lines on it are nice, the lights are fantastic accents to the body. The headlights are typical Porsche fair, they haven't followed the modern trend of turning everything into an angry face. Its one of the only modern production cars that still just looks like a car. Nothing extreme. Just subtle and refined.

I really wish the US had comparable quality of vision and design.
