The original is actually arguably less accurate than the Mao edited version, which removed a few blatantly wrong tales and added quotes from historical records.

This is actually arguably worse and sometimes downright evil, because the fictional parts change the context so that the quotes from historical records have their meanings completely changed.

The famous quote "seven parts facts, three parts fiction" was not meant to be a praise like most people seem to think. The quote actually comes from a harsh essay denouncing the Yanyi for perpetuating misbeliefs by mixing in actual history.

It's not like the the older versions of the novel disappeared, you just need to learn Chinese to read them.
Beside that, Moss Roberts has quite a few notes on the differences between the pre-Mao versions.
The most noticeable are the changes to the Guan Yu storyline since he was actually supposed to act like an asshole in the original and the novel points out that.
