I'd imagine it reduces bed drag and protects cargo against theft and weather. Since it's a pain in the ass to put on and off, I assume it's just easier to leave on and forget about it.

I inherited an '89 Chevy 1500 longbed extended cab (perfect showroom condition with low miles) from my grandfather. He put a cover on it (paint-matched sliding windows with screens) and I haven't taken it off. I use it for camping, back up to the site, inflate your air mattress and bam, no tent, no trailer and a hard roof over my head in case of bad weather. Guess why they're called CAMPER SHELLS!

my friend's father owns a Amarok with one of these. He is a tile constructor thing (don't know how to translate) and his items don't get wet, no one can steal em. If he wants to clean out the bed incase it gets dirty he just takes off the roof.

I'd like to turn a smaller version of that or one of these ARE toppers into a camper. It's got a nice stealth factor.

Because I like my shit to remain dry, I can use a trailer for when I need to transport something too big, dont have to strap and secure when I transport stuff like trash that easily blow away, it allows me to sleep in it, dont have to clean snow out of the bed during the winter, it may help prevent stuff getting stolen, and it has provided me with a good LED-bar mount in the past

I got one because
-I already had the truck and was going to college, so it would be nice to have a large, lockable space for my shit that I didn't know if I'd have room for in my dorm
-The bed was too shallow to cover my bass amp speaker so a tonneau cover wouldn't work
-They're actually great for moving, you can pack boxes all the way up to the roof and way further up the bed rails without strapping it down
-Mobile dog cage that you can hose out
-Throw brush in there without strapping it down then hose out afterwards
-Still more room than an suv (I had an explorer before and due to the crash ratings etc the panels are thicker). I can fit a flat sheet of plywood/sheetrock/whatever in my truck still and couldn't in my explorer.

They're practical as fuck once you try one out

I get your point though. We call 1/2 and 3/4 tons, "Jeeps" which is our term for any 4x4 (we call SUVs cars) or call it a pickup if they are used for work. To be called a truck there must be a primary commercial application.

So we will call a Suzuki carry a truck but an F-250 with anything beyond a base a trim is a jeep.

If cargo was all that mattered I could easily have bought a Toyota Hiace, which has like double the room. With the constant 4WD it has it actually gets around pretty darned well - but the issue is that it cant go offroad, and you cant fit all-terrain/mud-terrain tires to improve traction. It becomes an issue of sacrificing cargo space for capability

Ladder frame, stiff rear suspension, durable transmission, these are things crossover based SUVs do not have.

Contrary to Veeky Forums's beliefs a lot of people with trucks have travel trailers and shit to tow. Even if you don't tow with it and just beat the shit out of your truck you're going to be better off with a heavier duty truck. It's kind of why you don't see Rangers or unibody SUV's ever doing real work.
