Remember when this was about creepy, murderous animatronics? Is there any way to redeem this franchise, short of rebooting it with a horror writer?

I think you can do interesting things with human characters in the setting, you just have to give them fleshed out and proper motivations. The style of these games doesn't lend itself well to normal storytelling though, so unless he moves away from the point and click stuff it's probably not a good idea to imply anything complicated..
