Start with an LSD, since those shitheaps don’t come with one from the factory
Exhaust, the one it comes with is very restrictive for emissions
Also a simple tune with the after market exhaust will get you around 15-20 extra horsepower which is a good bump in Lightweight car like ND.
0-60 in 5.9 is pretty damn good imo especially on a miata
Driven them before lots of fun and surprisingly pretty fast too.

What you want is what's called a "LS swap". Japan makes great cars, but they are about 40 years behind in engine development. GM makes this LS family of engines which makes 350-425hp with no turbo or anything and they are the same size as the Miata engine.
