Total War Warhammer is fantasy yes. It's a turn based strategy game with real time battles(same with all the other total wars). The other total wars are history based.

Total War is grand strategy just like Europa Universalis, but turn based. Factions and cities are already placed and you take control over one faction. Not like in civ or other 4x where everything is randomly generated.
It also have battles in rts style, which are main focus of the series. Everything else is just excuse to put you into battles and give them some sort of meaning.
In no way it is similar to M&B, though people who play Total War seems to like M&B too and vice versa
