Ancient Grecian boy-soldiers had their tails cut off at a young age. That way enemies can't grab onto them, and they never develop a need to counter balance with their tails to begin with.

I actually saw a game like this recently, it was an amateur dev so I dont have a link but it is definitely possible and seemed like an interesting mechanic. Try it.
