Other than having the factory/dealer swap the gauge cluster to MPH is there any reason I can't buy and import a car directly from Japan that has already passed US crash and emissions testing?

Why ? you can already buy it here

Are you retarded?

No.

excise tax

There might be some problems with stuff that's required on new vehicles in the US but not in Japan, that sort of stuff, like how it will soon be necessary for all new vehicle to have a backup camera in the US and nowhere else.

They haven't passed crash testing. Standards are universally much lower outside of America. I believe Canada's either were or are even stricter than that

Why would you want that unless you're interested into kei-cars uf compact utility vehicles when they're pretty much all already built in the US too?
So you can be the lord of all weebs with your steering wheel on the wrong side of the car to make driving in traffic unnecessarily tedious?

But it's a Miata, we have them in the US..

this. As crazy as it sounds, the yew-ess has some pretty tight control on what cars get imported, not only for safety requirements, but also on admissions. While the JDM Miata is probably mostly there, that specific model would be impossible to import to the US, since the admission requirements and parts on that vehicle are only for JDM standards, not US.

tldr no sorry op, might be able to buy the red top if you know someone in nippon tho

but it isn't
it's clearly a mazda roadster, and we don't have those in the US

>admissions
Is the car trying to get into college?

just get the Miatabarth 2bh

duhhhh fuck im dumb
anyway if you want some interesting reading, there is a way around EMISSION requirements. ol' J-Seinfield himself helped a law get passed that allows rare, collectable, or historically significant cars to enter the US without dealing with a buncha bullshit.

Also, here's a list of cars that can be imported anyway, read the whole PDF
nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/elig120115.pdf

stop pretending the import ban wasn't and still isn't specifically for the protection of the big 3 German automakers

>Steering wheel on the wrong side
>Driving unnecessarily tedious
Found the bus pass holder.

Different motor (Japan only has the 1.5L)
Right hand drive
Non retarded turn signals

Probably have to change the head lamps to make them dip to the left rather than the right as well

Why would you want a right hand drive car in the US?

Visibility in a car with the steering wheel on the right while driving on the right will be worse. Deadspot control for merging, watching over the left/overtaking lane, giving way at intersection, all of this will be made more annoying because you're sitting on the wrong side.
