Hey Veeky Forums this is my first time buying snow tires for a new car. Holy hell I didn't realize they were so expensive...I'm in Canada, the cheapest pair sold by Canadian Tire is $115 each.

Is that pretty par for the course as far as prices for snow tires go? What price range should I look for?

I've got a base model 2017 honda civic fwiw.

Any help here is appreciated.

Prices vary depending on size and quality

Where are you buying from and what size? Studded or unstudded?

if you want winter tyres on the cheap but want them to also be good, then get yourself some Nokians

I expect you've never bought tires at all in your life. $115 a tire is fucking cheap.

1010tires is a good place to get winter tire packages from, as are some Honda dealers.

Veeky Forums's resident winter specialist.

Probably the only good tripfag who also happens to be very informative.

keep doing what you're doing o7

>Where are you buying from and what size?
I was just planning on buying from a retail store like Canadian Tire or Wal Mart or whatever. Not sure about the size; I guess I can check my tire size on the car somehow?

>Studded or unstudded?
ummm unstudded I suppose?

i'll look into the brand, thanks.

>Canadian tire
Boy you could probably Kijiji a good set of winters already mounted on steelies for ~500

You don't need winter tires, just brake about 25 feet earlier than you would normally.

I'll assume its the 215/55/16 stock size

These are the three I can recommend. Choosing between the three will depend on the terrain you face

If ice grip is your biggest worry then the WS80 wins
If its snow its still the WS80
Economy; X-Ice i3. They've got solid reputations for lasting long while also offering top-tier performance. Its also the one I'd recommend if you see a more mixed terrain of asphalt and snow/ice
The Hankook is the better all-rounder

All three are excellent tires and will suit you fine. I can also see that they're selling Continentals, but I recognize those tires as models that are outdated and no longer really sold here where I live, while the other three are all quite modern

holy crap, thanks tripfag. really appreciate the help.

Redpill me on putting 2 winter tires on a RWD car

Hankook ipike rsv from CT are fantastic and are one of the cheapest winter tires they sell. Pretty much a clone of altimax arctics.

you have to account for the fact you’ll only be using them for a few months and then you put them away, so really you get several years out of them

>what is panic braking

Public roads are not predictable.

Stupid. You almost always get a $50-100 rebate when you buy a set of 4 tires so it's like buy 3 get 1 free.

motomasters are shit, user. Get good snow tires and have them changed out AS SOON as the snow stops. This way they will keep for 5 or 6 years. have them mounted on steel rims so you can put them on yourself.

>Canada

here you go senpai

if you're in Vancouver or Toronto (i.e., not real canada) look into getting Nokian WRG3's instead, they are better for slush and "warmer" winter weather

Nokia Hakkapeliitta 9 is the only non-cringe option regardless of price.

Stupid nigger, your braking distances can increase tenfold in actual winter conditions. Not even talking about skidding and understeering out the ass.

>$115 each
>Expensive
If you are going to all the expense of buying snow tires, don't cheap out. Get some Nokian Hakkapeliittas and be safe in the snow instead of half-crapping it and having something not much better than an all season. Tires are one thing to absolutely never settle for less than the best on. A 3k Civic could out-hot lap a Bugatti if the Civic has racing slicks and the Bugatti has donut spares.

thats how much new tires cost poorfag

You think that's bad? Look up what tires cost for high end SUV's and shit. You're looking at $700 a tire. Even a base model has civic 16's or some shit? It's not going to be as cheap as the 14'' tire days obviously.

Ah, so you're a fresh example of those fags who whine about every tiny expense in life even as you buy stupid shit you don't need in the same credit card swipe.

What would be some good winter tires for a VW Jetta 2014? First car also. Should I go with HAKKAPELIITTA?
