Is there anything actually wrong with the AE86? I don't mean its following or the idiot webs that follow it, I mean actual physical problems it had.

Also, why the fuck do people price that thing at over $20k when the Levin is easily under $4k

>the Levin is easily under $4k
Proofs?

I've seen a few pop up under there, but you can get 92's for pocket change.
tradecarview.com/used_car_smart/toyota/corolla levin/?si=300

ive had many old Toyotas, its kinda pathetic AE86 have live rear axle. my 1979 Toyota Supra has the exact axle AE86 use and people strip Supra for their F313 solid rear axle because its factory limited slip

here in Canada you can get JDM ones for that price bracket, its LHD ones that the price gets fucked with. same as Supras

really the live rear axle but it is in performance vise about the same as miat
It's literally the japanese delorean, but unlike delorean its actually a good racecar with pedigree

I mean, I have a guy around here selling his MA70 Supra for $2500

I've seen the descriptions of it on Gran Turismo saying something about it not being very rigid, whatever that means.

It should have come with IRS.
Pic related is a better chassis, if only they developed the S motor sooner rather than fucking around with that old heap of shit 3TGTE....

I really like the shape and look of that Celica. Also, what's wrong with the 4A? Not like Toyota intended the AE86 to be fast.

3 door hatch has rigidity problems
the 2 door coupe doesn't have it as bad

Oh, okay. Simple enough. Speaking of the 2 door, has anyone seen one for sale? I haven't been able to find any recently.

What country? It varies by area
A USDM AE86 in good condition fetches around 8k USD
In germany, a good condition AE86 costs like 20k Euros or something dumb like that

Jesus Christ. I don't care where it's from, just as long as it can get to the US.

I'm talking about a 3SGE for the Celica, nothing wrong with the 4AGE in an AE86 but a 3SGE SA63 Celica would have been godly.
Jap spec ones came with dirty old 3TGTE motors with all sorts of issues...

Ohhh, okay.
could just diddly darn engine swaperino with anything else, though. Depends on how cheap it would be.

There are plenty out there, just look on your local craigslist
However you have to make sure to distinguish between the SR5 and the GTS trims when looking at them.

For example, I live on the east coast and here are some i found
This is an SR5 model. It's a 2 door coupe, pop up lights, but it has the crappy CARBORATED engine and not the 4AGE engine. It also has drum brakes in the rear as opposed to the 4 wheel disc brakes the performance models have. Guy is asking 2.7k which I feel is a bit too much but it looks like the body is in good condition
hartford.craigslist.org/cto/d/1986-toyota-ae86-sr5/6422347687.html

This one is (allegedly) a true GTS trim. It has the 4AGE (albiet the detuned US version). It is a 2 door coupe with pop up lights and has the 4 wheel dics brakes. The price is much higher at 6.5k. Supposedly has some sort of misfire which is probably why its being sold
This one has been on craigslist for a while, guessing he hasn't been able to find a buyer yet
newyork.craigslist.org/brx/cto/d/1985-toyota-corolla-gts-16v/6389354862.html

What's your local craigslist?

I'm in Tennessee, so probably something like Nashville or Murfreesboro. Also, thanks a ton for helping me.

It was eaten alive by contemporary hot hatches on the european market. They were cheaper, lighter, faster and offered a better handling (in stock form, of course).
And in germany everyone was (still is) running RWD Opels and BMWs so even on rallye stages they were a rare sight.

AE86s were rare in the 80s, then many were lost to rust or bought by finns to be wrapped around trees, and now there are like 12 left in europe and about 17 people arguing over them.

btw if you want to dagumi on a budget get a 318ti for 1500€, it's like the euro version of the 3k civic

>buying Japanese cars in a LHD country
There's literally no reason to do this.
America gets a pass because their market is so big a lot of Companies manufacture in the U.S for the U.S.

I only do it when the car I want is cheaper out of the country than it is in the country

Unfortunately there are none i found on craigslist for TN, but there are some in surrounding states like georgia, kentucky, etc
Most of them are rusting in yards though.
Search around
If you are serious about getting a AE86, be prepared to fix it because it's inevitable that it will need some fixing in the future. It may be a corolla, but it's still a 30 year old car that comes with all the issues of being a 30 (pushing 40) year old car
Also be careful if the seller says their car is a SR5 to GTS conversion. Half the time those cars have electrical or mechanical issues because the conversion process is not a simple one and a million things can go wrong

I want an AE86 or at least something like it. I'm probably gonna get a Levin or something if I do, considering they're usually half the price of a Trueno. If I don't, probably something like an S13, Celica, or MA70 Supra would do....
Unless I find a first-gen MR2.

>be a weeb
>make 110k at your software engineering job
>have no gf to spend your money
>dont drink or party
>only wear t shirts and Wal mart jeans
>pirate your vidya
>rent studio apartment or live at home
>diet consists of hot pockets and 7-11 hot food counter

Literally nothing to spend money on except gay little anime dolls and 20k weebmobiles

Suspension, chassis, and mod potential are 1:1 with the Fbody mustang. If you're not living where they're cheap you deserve to lose every dollar you spend on the meme tax.

Everything was fine until your retarded face showed up.

I do like the look of the foxbody, my only issue, and a stupid one, is that they don't really look like Mustangs.

>omg someone likes a car that was in an anime

MR2 you say?
knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/d/1987-toyota-mr2/6421341414.html

knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/d/1988-supercharged-toyota-mr2/6400499783.html

Neither the Celica nor Mk3 Supra have the same characteristics as the AE86. The 240SX is nice but finding one in good condition is a headache. The AW11 MR2 is basically a FWD Corolla with the engine shoved into the back to give it RWD
Snap oversteer is the worst in the first gen MR2s. Also rust is a big problem on the AW11 and the SW20

Thank you. I don't plan to do anything special with them, I just fucking love MR2s. Way cooler than any AE86. I plan on just using it as a daily.

What celicas are you interested in anyways? The older RWD or the more modern FWD ones?

southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/d/1986-corolla-sr5-ae86-on-sale/6408776305.html

I'm suspicious if this is legit, it's pretty cheap. Although it is an automatic.

Rear wheels. The look of the FWDs are cool and all, but REAR POWER

>why the fuck do people price that thing at over $20
Because idiot weebs that follow it because of animu and eurobeat memes are ready to pay that much.

this one is probably not running but cheap
louisville.craigslist.org/cto/d/1981-toyota-celica-gt-5-speed/6397277592.html
This one is running
knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/d/1985-toyota-celica-gt/6420899898.html

If you want to scour many area of craigslists at once, use Auto Tempest's craigslist search tool. It's pretty useful to find specific models in your local area.

I'd argue it's overpriced. It's a SR5 model that's automatic. Shouldn't be more than 2.5k

But it's a car from 1983. Time to just buy Levins if I want one, because there is no fucking way I'm paying over 10 for the same thing with pop-up headlights EVEN IF I LIKE THEM

Weaboos are fucking retarded that's why lmfao

And here I though Veeky Forums was just a bunch of lazy faggots. Thanks user

good price if it's in good condition.

>bought by finns to be wrapped around trees
Finland top #1 country in rally because we sacrificed so many Levins.

what does a mustang look like to you?

they're all very different cars in terms of looks.

well technically im just being lazy by punching in numbers and model names into this website and copy-pasting links
autotempest.com/

Fair enough, but the foxbody mustang almost looks japanese, while the others are distinctly FREEDOM

But you're being actually helpful.

whats wrong with it
>being killed instantly when some dumb whore in a SUV plows through a red while texting going a mere 30 km/h

I kekd

I'd argue the SN95 mustang looks the most foreign in terms design with the foxbody following closely behind

It looks like a stretched civic lol

yeah but if you look at the 90s one though it looks like it was made by mitsubuishi. as an owner of a foxbody convertible let me say just sitting in one feels like reagenomics

>pussy lips red interior
fucking what

definitely american styling.

does this look like a japanese man designed this car?

A bit, yeah. Mostly because I saw the file name.

i was considering the mustang- all apologies for getting you mixed up with the context.

You are seriously underestilating the rabid consumption instinct of the basic weeb. Seriously.
If you look at the second hand market for music on CD and vinyl, something quite similar happens. And for fairly similar reasons.
The japanese automotive industry had a solid reputation for quality and reliability in the 70s. This in a sense could be compared to the reputation for higher quality that japanese pressings of american records had in the 60s and 70s, especially compared to european pressings as the japanese versions, oftehn thanks to contracts at the establishment of local branches of american labels, got access to master tapes for their pressings whereas european pressings were often based on the slightly inferior pressing matrices on acetate. Hence the superior reputation of japanese pressings for two decades. This difference started to disappear in the 80s and when CDs became the norm and digital recording the standard, there was no difference anymore.
But the weeb market in a sense had appeared and now the proper animu-loving market is added to that and everyone knows it, second-hand sellers are perfectly aware that it's a captive market that does not mind being overcharged as they have caught themselves in the idea that their japanese products are necessarily rare and higher in quality and thus it is possible to crank up the prices and still sell very well.
And now we have sellers in Japan selling their supposedly "rare" products on western-centered platforms for several times the price they charge for the same product on japanese platforms. While selling from the same stock. And that's before shipping.
It has reached the point where quite notoriously, you can hardly find stuff like the Midori or Fishmans albums for less than 150$ each on platforms like discogs WHILE THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE BRAND NEW UNDER BLISTER AT REGULAR PRICES ON JAPANESE PLATFORMS
Why?
Because weebs are idiots who think the more you pay, the better. And sellers know it.

oh
rip

Post moar rally levins, they look cool as fuck

Mustangs haven't "looked like mustangs" since the first generation. The boomers conned you into thinking the first gen was the only acceptable look.

By mustang I mean having an american look. The newer ones since about 2000 look fine

2000 was the new edge, the best looking one. 2005 was the S197 DUDE RETRO LMAO.

Gotta go to work, have fun fucking around in this thread

thanks for the pasta

Update from work, I probably will by that MR2

>The look of the FWDs are cool
Nigga.

TA22 Coupe and RA29 Liftback are porn on wheels.

Retrobuilt makes a fucking beautiful kit, I'd buy their Boss 302 in a hot minute if I was rich.

I'm just not too much of a fan of that look. Plus, it looks weirdly like an American muscle car for some reason.

most 70s japanese sports cars imitated American muscle, and it's great
Like this beautiful, incredibly rare, and even more incredibly expensive Nissan Skyline GTR (C110)

Huh.

Ae86 thread?

Guess so

That has to be Keiichi.

the single best gif of all time, i never can manage to avoid watching it for a minute or two when it's posted

Anyone got rally AE86s?

That's pretty much the best thing I've ever seen. I'm guessing it's Keiichi Tsuchiya?

autocorrect cant fix a non-physical keyboard 2bh
it's one problem and another

supply and demand

live rear is perfectly fine in a car that size

yeah the Irish. They are known for using AE86's for rally

>Tsuchiya?

Nope

youtube.com/watch?v=a1GFmrjVMNI

yup. underpowered as shit. overpriced because intial D tax.

levin cheaper cos has the even slower single cam

Levin =/= AE85

NANI!?

>everything centered around driver so no bitches or passengers can fuck with the radio, heat, etc.
Im in love

>IRL problems
Aside from problems due to poor mods, neglect, and drift damage? The 4AGE was a simple, reliable engine. It’s possible for it to develop leaky gaskets, blow head gaskets and put rods through the oil pan like any other engine. The transmission’s 5th gear had pop-out issues and the rear end was weak

FF eastwest is perfectly fine in a car that size.
But FR IRS would be better!

My car getting towed and me following it

Here is both of them

They both look great
I really wished they gave the GT86 a rear hatch like the old 3 door corolla, or 7th gen Celica. The rear trunk is just painfully small
I also wish they didnt redesign the front to look retarded

Well there are a few things id change on the new 86 but i dont think id make it a 3 dr hatch. It looks fine as is minus the fake fender vents

Fucking rip

It was gettig towed for the beams swap. So not rip.

BEAMS or F20C swap? Hypothetically.

I'm not sure if the distance or perspective is messing with my eyes, but I always thought the GT86 was much larger than the AE86 but they look around the same size in your pic. How do they compare irl?

Hypothetically? I had the choice to do either swap and picked the beams engine. First reason being the cheaper cost but after all the costs for parts youd probably spend only like 2k more doing the f20 swap. Two, the torque curves are pretty similar on the stock engines and they arent much different unless you boost them.

Length wise they are almost the same. Width probably about the same as well.

The new 86 is almost better in every way of the old one desu. Just in stock form though from my personal experience. With the beams swap and full suspension parts tho, thats a different story.

Hey i didnt fucking write "desu" fuck you mod

pop-up headlights > fixed headlights
up down up down up down up down up down

Agreed.

I can't be the only one who does that

People pay 20k for the flip up headlight one because Chinese cartoons. So the non flipup one is the less desired, therefore less money.

As far as problems, only ones inherent in getting such an old car. Any car that age is going to be a bit of a project car. Also the 4A-GE block itself starts to crack and bleed once you reach 250+ hp range. Also gutless torque, even when beefed up.

>Also gutless torque, even when beefed up.

lol, the point of the car is not to have high hp. its a fun lightweight car and when it weighs like 2000lbs and making around 200 hp+ that power to weight ratio is redic.
