But user, the trope you're discussing has been in JRPGs since the beginning of time. Most people who've been playing games for any significant amount of time would likely instantly realize that you can't beat him and that the fight will end with you dying or some other cutscene well before the boss drops below even 80% HP.

I am well aware of this trope, having played dozens of JRPGs. But, XIV being the shounen stories to beat shounen stories, the Warrior of Light is nigh unstoppable. Which is why it was so damn amazing to realize your character isn't unstoppable since the unthinkable can be made possible: man-made Echo. I suppose, though, you could argue that was the only route left to the writers.
