I think Goro's redemption/sacrifice might not have been so polarizing if it wasn't predicated on the idea that he developed a special bond with Joker that changed his mind. Personally I didn't feel like a lot of emphasis was placed on building up a sincere connection with him, so it felt a bit artificial.
