historically, tanker is the safest job you can get. Firstly, because tanks are hard to kill, especially to artillery that contributes to majority of deaths during wars. Secondly, because trained tankers are valuable, and no army leaves them to their fate.
Casualty rate during WW2 for US was 18.5% (758k deployed, 140k killed) for infantry and 3% (50k deployed, 1700 killed) for tank crews.
