It's a mystery. The last time they tried it turned out really, really well, despite being based on a pretty bad car. It even set the FWD Burgerking record. Cruze hatch would be a much better starting point than a Cobalt. The Verano Turbo could have been one, but it didn't have the suspension for it.

The Viper right down to the name was meant to be an homage to the Cobra as during development, Carroll Shelby had partnered with Dodge.
