Serious question:
I buy 10 shares of stock A @ $100 each in taxable account on April 1st. I then buy 10 shares of stock A @ $50 each on April 5th. If the stock is still trading @ $50 a share and I sell my 10 shares in my taxable account on May 6th, can I write off the short term loss with a cost basis of $100 as long as I don't repurchase before June 6th? Also can I sell my non-taxable account shares at any time without it being a wash sale?
Nicholas Adams
Ignore the last sentence. It's too non specific. End it with the question ..."before june 6th"

>>What do you do for work? Manufacturing Technician >>What special designations do you hold? None. I am technically unskilled work, though I'm a former veteran, nuclear electronics technician/reactor operator >>Annual Salary? 92k taxable last year. If I get a raise that I'm due, I should hit 100k for 2018 >>What makes you qualified to give Veeky Forumsness advice on Veeky Forums? I've read 1/4 of the Veeky Forums books, was here at the founding of Veeky Forums and suggested Investor's Manifesto and Four Pillars to the image, have been saving money since 2008 and investing since 2009. I'm on the path towards financial independence. And if I see a path to it and it worth doing(fucking roboadvisors, automation) I would probably be happiest in life as a Financial Planner. I'm 29, and excluding whatever my house is worth(I've lived through too many real estate bubbles), I have 115k in 401k, 37k in ROTH, and 93k in taxable brokerage account.
Landon Hughes
As far as I understand it, if you wait 90 days than you're golden. It's the letter of the law, not the spirit in this case, and nobody is ever going to look over your shit to the point that they'd catch that. I think you do make sure your sale is FIFO though, just doublecheck.

Goals... What major did you have at uni/college?
Isaiah Flores
Not really. But I'm working in a regional office in Australia. New York or London is probably a different story obviously. I know for a fact Melbourne is crazy
Camden Richardson
Yes, what makes you think you couldnt? You technically can specify what lots you want to sell, but it usually defaults to first in first out. But like you said, you have to wait 31 days before you purchase the same or similar security.
In a non taxable account like an IRA, wash sales are irrelevant
its 30 days before or 30 days after a sale, not 90 days.
Christian Bell
surprisingly, I was a hospitality management major in college, which is part of the business school. When I was in college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, and there were a lot of girls in that major so it did it (obviously not thinking ahead).
A year out of school, I realized how retarded working in that industry is, and got lucky with getting hired on with a major firm where I got my licenses.
My degree hanging in my office is kinda embarrassing desu, but the CFP(R) hanging above it stands out much more.
Jack Morris
I'm making sure I'm understanding it correctly and I literally have no one else irl to talk about it. I could call my broker but I'd literally rather ask 4 chan than sit through phone prompts
