I buy 10 shares of stock A @ $100 each in taxable account on April 1st. I then buy 10 shares of stock A @ $50 each on April 5th. If the stock is still trading @ $50 a share and I sell my 10 shares in my taxable account on May 6th, can I write off the short term loss with a cost basis of $100 as long as I don't repurchase before June 6th? Also can I sell my non-taxable account shares at any time without it being a wash sale?

I've read 1/4 of the Veeky Forums books, was here at the founding of Veeky Forums and suggested Investor's Manifesto and Four Pillars to the image, have been saving money since 2008 and investing since 2009. I'm on the path towards financial independence. And if I see a path to it and it worth doing(fucking roboadvisors, automation) I would probably be happiest in life as a Financial Planner.
I'm 29, and excluding whatever my house is worth(I've lived through too many real estate bubbles), I have 115k in 401k, 37k in ROTH, and 93k in taxable brokerage account.
As far as I understand it, if you wait 90 days than you're golden. It's the letter of the law, not the spirit in this case, and nobody is ever going to look over your shit to the point that they'd catch that. I think you do make sure your sale is FIFO though, just doublecheck.

Yes, what makes you think you couldnt? You technically can specify what lots you want to sell, but it usually defaults to first in first out. But like you said, you have to wait 31 days before you purchase the same or similar security.
In a non taxable account like an IRA, wash sales are irrelevant

surprisingly, I was a hospitality management major in college, which is part of the business school. When I was in college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, and there were a lot of girls in that major so it did it (obviously not thinking ahead).
