Rs are for farming bonus pendants. For each R alive at the end of a magna raid, you get eight. You can trade 5000 for an SSR magna weapon.
As far as your grid, you could probably spend some time waiting to pull some good characters or summons before picking a main element, unless you spent some money to do so. Once you've picked one, grind the hell out of the magna (omega for gaijin) fight, you want a ton of the +atk magna weapons for your grid
