How do I even use poloniex? I'm used to coinbase where I can just drop dollars into it. I want to buy some strange coins and can't figure it out.

Go to Balances -> Deposits & Withdrawals,
Find BTC row and click on deposit,
send btc to that address,
then go to Balances -> History and wait for completion.

Go to Exchange, click on BTC tab and select coin you wanna buy.
Then submit the amount in Buying panel.

Have you made your own .bat to include your own wallet address?

But there are a lot of cool projects out there in development and you can invest in their coins (LBC for example ;).
And there's technical analysis of the charts,, but that's a whole other world.
