i had a feeling from the ending of second stage that Nakazato and possibly even Shingo were to become huge characters from 3rd stage onward based on the ending of 2nd stage with him saying

This is a good point, the first time Takumi had no idea what was going on and the second time he just wanted to get the full tank of gas from Bunta. He had to go miffed sweaty mode to pull off the overtake on Nakazato, and Keisuke also only won to Nakazato by a hair's width. It was a pretty well paced match between the two.

It's also worth noting that in the audio drama, him and Nakazato were constantly racing to see who had the faster time. First Shingo had a time one second faster, then Nakazato beat his by a third of a second. They then race, with Nakazato burrowing someone else's S13, with Nakazato winning. In the ending of Second stage, he is racing against Nakazato (in his R32 this time) and is right alongside of him. So despite having one of the weakest cars in the series, Shingo is actually quite skilled.

Nakazato was only able to be overtaken by Takumi because he wasn't expecting him to do the gutter run anywhere besides his home course. Nakazato chose that course because it was mostly guardrails, except the point where Takumi overtook was the only place without a guardrail.

In a rally setting, perhaps, but 'drifting' in rally is just the norm to maneuver 140km/h sweepers on dirt. It's kinda hard to not lose lateral traction in rally surfaces, but I'd imagine that with very few exceptions that 'grip' lines versus drift lines on tarmac will always be superior. Once you exceeed the grip levels of a tyre, it greatly diminishes cornering speed.
Drifting on tarmac requires no balls at all.

Takumi's major autism makes him skew the value of grip vs drift, Nakazato is on the mark with his "grip philosophy" even though it's just common racing. It should be obvious that nothing Takumi does in the series is completely comparable to real life, but in a perfect world where real people moved like that kid it would be ideal to 100% drift.

Keiichi drifted because he was a superior driver in every way and was just doing it for show, Takumi's style is literally "I hit perfect drifts every time to never lose speed etc. etc." to the breaking point where it doesn't matter if the enemy driver grips or drifts, such perfect unrelenting autismo skill makes it pointless to argue which is faster. Gripping is more practical for all intents and purposes but if you can do those 110% drifts Takumi does, on every corner like him, then of course it would be superior.
