The car has enough inertia that I am able to steer it around a corner and into an on-street parking spot. Much thanking of heavens and angels. Then a fairly long walk to an auto parts store.

There at the counter the guy immediately says "It's your module."
Need to decide whether to pretend I know just what he's talking about or be honest. Choose authenticity and say "What's that?"

Buy $22- something metal part with plastic in it. Walk back to car, swap out part screwed into top of wheelwell - car starts perfectly and drives fine for years after.

I did this with a starter. Pain in the fucking ass to remove and put the new one in, just to realize that it was fine, and just the plastic clip holding the wire on broke off.

I'm kinda glad that happened because I learned I could fix almost anything. It was so hard disassembling the mangled suspension parts at 16 with no experience. But I powered through and now my cars never go the shop (except for mounting tires and aliments, idk how to do that shit)

Interestingly enough I had a firebird ignition control module do the same thing. But it didn't just die once like that it would shut off all the time at higher rpm under load because the module couldn't keep up spark as it was dying then it finally died all the way and didn't even crank anymore. Guess "bird" cars have bad modules
