I've driven chinese and indian motorcycles and it's laughable to think these nations are ready to design their own cars. They may pull off cheap, low quality rip offs or build things someone else designed, but I wouldn't trust either to design a bicycle.

This. Countries who weren't already in the manufacture race from the start have a lot to do to catch up. Though hiring teams from big manufacturers helps, you still have to build up an entire industry from almost nothing.

China's made up a lot of ground and they're doing damn good business in growing markets, especially South America. I was done in Western SA last year and there's Lifans and Great Walls everywhere.
