I still dont understand this fucking passion of the All FWD in france.
The 505 was known to have excellent handling because of the 4 wheel independent suspension, and shit like the R25 would've been so much better in RWD.
I just dont fucking get it. There's no fucking logic behind it beyond poorfag one with "muh ff is cheap" but seeing how everyone got their shit plastered by germans and british in the upper markets it should really fucking ring a bell, damnit.

Fuck I triggered myself thinking about how they also didn't understand "affordable sports" either. Seriously doesn't this styling and silhouette scream RWD? Fuck I just want to experience something different from FWD hatches for once.

The weird thing is they did, somewhat.
The 505, R25 and CX/XM were all good premium cars, but that's it. They were good, while the 5 series and E klasse were great.
A big problem actually comes from the fucking laws. Due to our insane tax pricing on cars, no french manufacturer wanted to make powerful cars with rwd/awd because they cost a lot more in both insurance and tax (especially when the vignette system was in place).
It really killed everything when we had the potential to fuck up germans so fucking hard in our home market.
I think Renault planned to make the R25 AWD too, because there's this big ass empty tunnel under the passenger compartment that goes all the way to the rear axle and there's openings in the rear triangles that line up perfectly with the hub, as in they wanted to slap the Quadra system on it.
It just makes me sad, especially when nearly all the in house stuff PSA and Renault made until the '90s was fucking great.
They could've never been seen as european hyundai tho, reliability and quality (especially on drivetrains and suspension, bar renault's godawful longitudinal FWD gearbox) is good.
Renault turned to FF very early because they had turned to RR very early.
I'm wishing they'd have kept making RWD cars but the Fregate Fiasco basically made them go "nope" on any possibility of a pure Renault RWD.

The R25 is one of my favorite cars ever.
Renault really, REALLY should've made it anything other than FWD. The handling is good and safe but it would be improved tenfold if it didnt understeer like a pig under hard acceleration and cornering. The engines are literally all good, even the 2.1 diesel. The biggest weakpoint was the electronics and the gearboxes.
I did some research about the fucking unknown tunnel under the body but nothing came up. Mentioned nowhere but it is definitely there.
I would love to convert one to RWD or AWD if I have the chance.
If I do this I might as well make it a coupe too for shits and giggles.
