Hey everybody. I'm 18 and live in southern California. I have been driving two years with zero insurance claims and zero tickets. I am a huge Honda guy and I really want to purchase an s2000. I know they are not very good for younger driver's but I think I am mature enough to respect it's limits. The car would be my only car and I have enough cash to purchase a decent one. I am able to do all maintenance myself as I am fairly mechanically inclined. My only concern is my insurance. I currently drive an 02 civic si hatchback with full coverage and the price isn't too bad. Would it be stupid of me to sell my si and buy an s2000 before they keep climbing in price?

If you don’t buy it now you’ll regret it for the rest of your life

I'm scared you're right. They're becoming more and more valuable each year. I'm trying to be responsible with my money but I've wanted an s2000 since I was a child and I can finally afford to buy one.

I've driven both an ap1 s2k and an NA miata. I liked the miata way more. The s2k has a cool motor that redlines to 9k but it burns a shit ton of oil and has no torque.

>I am a huge Honda guy
For you

Off topic, but I want to exhaust fuck that car.

insurance will be a pain
>under 25 male driver
>over the 200HP threshold
>RWD
>older than 10 years
>2 doors
>likely a bright color paint
also the asking price for S2Ks are already stupid, you could buy quite a few miatas

yeah man, if you love the car. you seem stable enough, the car will make up for having to pay more if thats the case

I'm not really into miatas, but it would probably be a more responsible car than an s2000 at my age at least. Maybe after college I'll get an s2000 if there's any left.

Definitely tempting. I'm just scared I'll go broke trying to pay for insurance.

Friend, at this point you might as well just buy a miata. It fills the same role as an s2000, but is cheaper to insure and cheaper to fix.

I mean both are rwd and manual, I don't think you'll see a difference unless you like red line to 9k.

Fucking do it.
I own one (03 ap1)
It's the best damn car I have ever driven, and I've driven a lot of cars.
reliable as shit, and easy to work on. I've got nearly 150k miles, I drive it like a racecar, redline every day many times, and not one major component has failed or worn out yet. (I do go through tires and brakes like they're going out of style though...)
The roads in SoCal are very well suited to that car, I'm jealous.
I've got the factory service manual in digital form handy if you want it.

The natural oversteer is fun as shit when you get used to it, but early on you need to respect it or it will total your car. It drifts nicely accelerating or braking
Don't fall for the anti-bumpsteer meme. The engineers put the bump steer in for a good fucking reason. Gently transfer weight forward and aft in a corner... When the grin hits both ears, you'll understand.

Let it warm up to 2 bricks on the temp gauge before you drive off. If you don't, you will eventually destroy the intake manifold gasket at the coolant outlet at the back of the engine, and you will leak coolant.

1) don't care for the way they look
2) slower than my civic in stock form
3) don't like the way they sound
4) I'm pretty devoted to Honda as a brand
I hear testimonials like these all the time. Thank you for the guidance also. I do appreciate it. California is a great place for car guys in general. Plenty of tracks, twisty mountain roads, lots of other car enthusiasts.

I'm in my 20's, and comprehensive on the s2k costs me less than $100 a month. Check Geico, try to buy an older one. The Ap1 is the better car anyway.
>slower than my civic in stock form
Even modded, Miatas hit a pretty low ceiling.
Back in CO, even stock, it was not difficult to mop the floor with a turbo Miata in the mountains.

I'm paying $150/mo for full coverage including theft and roadside assistance through statefarm. I like the ap1 and ap2 so it will come down to whichever I can find a clean example of at a better price. Budget is 15k +/- 1k. My civic is no racecar but it will blow the doors off a stock Miata any day.

Theres really nothing like it honestly
Its one of the few cars that you can leave bone stock and it'll be incredible. Anything added is just extra toppings on an already fine cake.
Best purchase of my life.

Dont see myself ever selling it except for a few special cars like a FD. Can never go back to being an rpmlet
