"this is a good game but it's not what I expected"
"omg these pvp patches are awful it just keeps getting worse"
"wait we have to buy the game AGAIN to get the 'real' version?"
most people did not buy DS1 on day 1 so they didn't have to deal with the awful pre-patch izalith and such, so it was a bit unfairly compared (DS2 day 1 had a lot of infinite stunlock combos and spells were absurdly OP).
on top of that, PC players got hit hard by scholar since unlike playstation or xbox players, they had a re-release on the same platform (though From probably considers DX9 vs DX11 "different platforms") and fans did not like the idea that if they bought the base game, they didn't get scholar for "free". There was an upgrade period but most people missed it, I think it was very short for only a few weeks.
It wasn't until after scholar and matthewmetosis's videos started gaining reddit traction that fans really started ripping into the game. There were a few threads early on about how Miyazaki wasn't involved but people didn't consider it a "bad" game until those videos, and it became a meme to then hate on it because of that

I'm on my first playthrough of Dark Souls, so far I've rang the bell after the gargoyles and gotten past the first titanite demon and unlocking that door in the forest before going back to head down for the Lower Undead Burg. It feels like I've been doing things in a weird order but it's all been a blast so far, the claymore is too stronk
Also I summoned that knight to help with the gargoyles and he ended up dying, does that matter at all?
Zachary Young
Using the bonfire made the game have a more lonely feel to it which I felt helped the atmosphere of Lordran.
Samuel Anderson
> It feels like I've been doing things in a weird order this is a fine order. You don't have the open that door in the forest now (and there is a way to get there without opening it) and the forest is mostly "optional" because you don't need to go there yet, you could just go straight to lower undead burg. But it's not very hard and there's great loot so it's better to do the forest first anyway.
Solaire stays alive even if he dies as a phantom in a battle. However, there's a lot of other things that can make him unable to help you out later, so don't be surprised if he disappears. The NPC questlines in dark souls 1 are very convoluted, I wouldn't worry about them on your first playthrough.

I'd rather play this shit than Friday 13th.

Yeah this is true. It enhanced the whole tone and atmosphere of the game which was all about desolation. Anyway my levelupfu is the one from DS3

>unlocking that door in the forest With the crest? For it you either killed the blacksmith (VERY stupid thing to do) or wasted 20k for an area that can barely help you as a new player this early in the game (not to mention you can go there without opening the door, it's just very inconvenient). As for the rest, you're pretty much on the intended track. Remember to go back to firelink for events and that upgrading your weapon is far more important than your stats (as long as you can swing your weapons and at least mid if not light roll with your preferred armor

but DS2 didn't have many references to DS1, and the few it did were just side gimmicks, not actual plotlines or world elements
it also wasn't dark and gloomy at all
Samuel Roberts
>DS2 didn't have many references to DS1 and the few it did were just side gimmicks, not actual plotlines
One of the big themes of Dark Souls 2 was the reincarnation of the Lord Souls, the Old Ones' NG+ Souls make it explicit that the DS1 Lord Souls supposedly reincarnated into the DS2 "Old Ones" which retarded as fuck which is also why DS3 tried it's best to forget that the shitshow that was Dark Souls 2 was rightfully forgotten.
>it also wasn't dark and gloomy at all Yea because the lighting engine got taken out. It was supposed to be really dark (which I would've liked honestly) but they pulled a total and utter bait and switch with the product, sold the game two times to people and STILL didn't include the original lighting engine.
Thomas Sanchez
It's called DARK Souls, candyass. If you want bright and cheery go play something else That is the most fitting for the character, but the non-stomp version is better DaS3 is basically DeS2 in a lot of ways
Evan Barnes

Blake Brooks
>need to make a sequel to a game that doesn't have a sequel I imagine an alternate universe where miyazaki didn't force DS1 references in to DS2 and you would be complaining how DS2 didn't take ANYTHING from DS1's story. The references in DS2 are annoying but harmless, and designed to not affect the game if you didn't play DS1. Which is better than having tons of refererences that almost require playing DS1 first to understand half of the shit going on.
>DaS3 is basically DeS2 in a lot of ways only mechanically, and maybe in some levels like CotD or Ithryll dungeon. It's nothing like DeS in terms of game design.
Nathaniel Smith
>trying to get colorless demon souls
Gabriel Garcia

Jeremiah Fisher
>miyazaki He had barely any involvement. And ds2 would be better off like that, there would be no question that it was its own game with its own story, just with similar things. And even better if it was renamed to Giants' Souls, since that's what the game is basically about. Is the Dark Soul even mentioned anywhere in 2? Also, regarding DeS, it draws massive amounts of inspiration. Things like Yhorm, the Stormruler, King of the Storm, combining 2 swords, a bunch of shit in Lothric etc
Jaxon Brooks
>you would be complaining how DS2 didn't take ANYTHING from DS1's story
Not really. After DS3 came out, I started appreciating DS2 as it's own "meanwhile in Drangleic" side story.
If they didn't do these really shallow and shitty ties to DS1 and instead focused on DS2's original story and paced the storytelling better, DS2 would've been a much better game.
Everything related to DS1 is handled in a shitty way and Dark Souls 3 was a much better sequel to DS1 BUT
Dark Souls 2 had a lot of self-contained lore that was cool as hell. Eleum Loyce and the whole thing with Ivory Kang and Alsanna was awesome, like it's own small pocket story within the Dark Souls universe, and the story of Vendrick / Nashandra and Velstadt and Raime was pretty dank, the only problem is that the story was presented fairly shittily and you only start getting any real lore at Drangleic Castle at which point the main game is nearly over. Dark Souls 2 has a lot of good stuff but it's buried under mounds of unsatisfying and pointless filler that only exists for the sake of padding out the game.
Grayson Richardson
>find talisman of god in 4-1 >trade said talisman with the bird >dupe the soul
Thomas King
>Is the Dark Soul even mentioned anywhere in 2? is it mentioned anywhere in 1? 3's the only game I know of that actually calls out the dark soul as something distinct. 1 was just extremely vague about everything. The only thing that could be construed as the "dark soul" is the soul of manus.
2 has an interesting and unique story of its own despite the references. But 3 is BURIED underneath it's references, so much so that cool things like the religion of the deep, King lothric, Sulyvahn, profaned capital, or the backstories of major characters take a back seat to LOL ANDRE. There was a seriously cool story about colliding continents and kingdoms with their own views on fedual kingdom falling apart underneath the weight of its own religious propaganda.
What sucks about DS3's references is that they take such preference over the actual story that we got cheated out of a good standalone story.
>DeS Visual inspiration =/= being the same game. DeS's game design was still fundamentally different from DS3, mostly due to having multiple parallel areas instead of a linear path, and from having enemies that dropped healing and restoration items, along with having levels, enemies, and bosses share the same gimmicks/types/resistances instead of being haphazardly chosen for the level.
DS3 is still more like BB than any of the souls games, and of the souls games it's closer to DS1's design than DeS or DS2. DS3 plays pretty much like DS1 would, if DS1 didn't have the master key and new londo/graveyard didn't open up until after anor londo.
Brody Cooper
>Not really. After DS3 came out, I started appreciating DS2 as it's own "meanwhile in Drangleic" side story.
this is basically my complaint with DS3. Remove the cringy references from DS2 and you get a neat story, remove them from DS3 and you have a half-finished story that doesn't make a lot of sense. It's neither self-contained nor consistent, making it the worst of both worlds.

Kaathe does and it's shown in the intro cinematic (which doesn't say that it is, but can be inferred since it says it's the Pygmy) >2 has an interesting and unique story of its own despite the references definitely but it's much less fleshed out and honestly it's best to pretend the references aren't there It's a direct sequel. Blake Nelson
>It's a direct sequel. It shouldn't be, because From is fucking awful at direct sequels. All their best games are original stories or set so far in the future that the events of the first game no longer matter. DS3 is weird.
Mason Gomez
I personally think that DS3 provided a pretty good conclusion to the series considering that DS1 did not need a sequel in the first place and most of the plot threads from DS1 were closed.
Landon Taylor
Ds1 and ds2 achieved the atmosphere without being all grey and washed out
Henry Miller
Aren't KF games sequels? I haven't played them so I can't speak for them. And I agree it would be better if it wasn't a sequel. But it is and therefore removing all references is silly, you're removing intended backstory. Although sure, a lot are out of place or make little to no sense. It's supposed to give an extra sense of dread. Ds3's world is way more fucked than Ds1 or 2. Light itself is fading. The whole "skybox turns to eclipse" is fucking amazing and it's a damn shame they didn't utilize it better, essentially putting the whole world in pure black tendency but instead of just black phantoms, many more pus of man hollows, maybe pus of man other enemies, red eyed versions etc. It would also be a bit better if the game wasn't sso linear, so by the time you get that sky there are a bunch of optional areas ahead of you that you would play one or the other way. Except the settlement, all areas before dancer have to be completed with blue sky and the archives have to be done with the eclipse, making a total of 3 areas where you have a choice
Alexander Perez
I think that it would've been cool if the game had had two major paths to the Lords before the endgame and if you do two of the lords, the Eclipse sets in and buffs the PvE in the game world, which makes the remaining two slightly harder areas in comparison to if you were doing them first.
And then you could have the endgame in Lothric Castle / Grand Archives.
I was so disappointed that the Eclipse had no in-game effect considering the night phases in Bloodborne actually had effects like Yahar'gul before and after Blood moon.
DS2 didn't really have a similar atmosphere to DS1 / DeS. DS2 was way too cartoony and it was also the lowest age rated game due to a reason, it wasn't as "dark" fantasy or grim as DS1 / DeS.
Dylan Wood
I'm pretty sure something of the sort was planned, back when you could visit nighttime lothric and fight gundyr in oceireeee's arena, but was scrapped altogether. I also remember when the low-res soundtrack names were leaked and we had "decyphered" it, the way the homoprince soundtrack was named almost made it look like we'd fight one or the other, perhaps a relic of the time when the above was true Also, is that the corvian village? I don't remember a waterwheel
Nicholas Lewis
It was done in BB. There are 3 stages changing the world, evening, night and red moon.
Brayden Cook
That's art of the corvian village indeed.
>the way the homoprince soundtrack was named almost made it look like we'd fight one or the other
That kind of coincides with The Know leak vids about DS3 where they talked about the sacrifice mechanic that sounded like it was supposed to switch the nature of the areas kind of like Demon's Souls world tendency or Dark Souls 2 bonfire aesthetics.

There is nothing compelling them to stand in the cloud at all, so getting the first puff off is the most you can hope for, unless that first one gives the player brain damage and they jsut stand in it. Honestly it feels very underwhelming in pvp. If you could at least stand in it to zone and conceal actions it would be great

Hello, /dsg/, I'm here on behalf of FromSoftware.
Several Bamdo Namcai community representatives have told me that you had concerns or confusion around decisions made throughout the series, particularly regarding the latest installment.
Since the series is now concluded, I feel no reason to keep things hidden. I'm here to answer any and all questions about the lore, mechanics, and development decisions of the Dark Souls series.
Please post your questions to this thread, and I will do my best to answer promptly. Truth be told, I am more used to using 2chan and the Japanese language, but thanks to Google Translate and a team of internet experts, I feel confident I will be able to respond in a satisfactory way.
Sincerely, — Hayao Miyazaki, Company President of FromSoftware
(Note: If you doubt this is official, please check my personal twitter account for proof.)
That depends on which game you are referring to. In the first installment, Dark Souls, poise was thought of as a balancing statistic, and as a way of making the game more interesting in multiplayer.
In Dark Souls 2, we refined the concept, thus creating a more varied experience for different playstyles throughout the game.
In Dark Souls 3, we finally perfected it, and I'm proud to say that, today, it is exactly what we envisioned when we first started development on the series.
Elijah Ward

Ha ha! That is a matter of contention within the company. However, many of us agree that the Velka model is probably the most attractive and interesting female character design we ever created. Unfortunately, time constraints made it impossible for us to include her in the game. As means of apology, we took an early poorly-textured model and used it as a 'statue' of Velka, though I'm sorry to say it pales in comparison to what we had planned.

Who is the best cleric, mage and pyromancer of each DS game?

why does DaS2 feel like a game sequel from the 90' ? it fixes most of the problems of its predecessor yet it feels like an entirely different game.
Zachary Gutierrez
Why do you hate invaders so much?
I've been invading since Demon's Souls, so I've got experience, and win like 99% of invasions with the other 1% being lag or shit I simply cannot control. But what about players new to invasions or just want to rank up their covenants? Do you realize how much we have to take in order for a win? And how cheesy we generally have to be. I'm personally not complaining, since again, I find the challenge fun and I enjoy shitting on a group of 3-5 completely alone. But again, what about the newer players who want to invade?
Andrew Rodriguez
As long as we're on the subject of Velka, what was her original purpose in the game? Did she have any family ties to Gwyn? It's a popular theory that she's Gwyndolin's mother, and her crows dropping Souvenirs of Reprisal in the Painted World seems to suggest some sort of connection.
Aiden Bennett
My team has been in talks with Studio Trigger regarding an adaptation of a certain manga. I can't tell you which one it is, due to legal reasons, but I will say that Kentaro Miura is the author.
The Primordial Serpents were originally envisioned as a single plucky pet which would act as comic relief throughout the adventure, but we later scaled the model up and adapted the character to be several go-betweens to help the player arrive at the Firelink Altar.
They were supposed to be deformed baby wyverns with no arms, wings, or legs, as a way to get the player to wonder what life would be like without limbs. They were inspired by my quadriplegic nephew Makoto, who was also the namesake for a weapon in Demon's Souls.
Is that you, Tanimura?
Dark Souls 2 was an experiment, and I'm sorry to say that in many ways it was a failed one. As creative consultant, I did my best to bring elements from Dark Souls 1 back into the game, but was blocked on many occasions. I'm proud to say that Dark Souls 3 is an improvement on every level.

Yes. As a company, we are planning to create similar posts on several popular Dark Souls subreddits and 2chan, as well as on the official forums. We are testing the waters with this post, however, to appraise community response.
I apologize. I can neither confirm nor deny the titles or source material for future or in-development projects.
Yes.
As I've stated previously in interviews, I got the idea for the multiplayer in Souls from a traffic jam in which strangers helped each other out anonymously. I based invasions on the bullies who would randomly jump out of the woods near my house and anonymously hit me with bricks while robbing me. As the Souls series has gone on, however, I've become more wealthy, and have been able to employ a PMC to keep the hooligans off my property. Thus I have had less inspiration than usual in that department. My apologies.
Velka was originally planned to be a hard-to-find vendor in New Londo, who would sell miracles, a talisman, rings of sacrifice, and purging stones. Unfortunately, we decided that gave New Londo too much of a 'homely' feel, so we replaced her with dozens of screaming ghosts. Because her model wouldn't work outside of a flooded environment, we gave what was was completed of her dialogue and inventory to Oswald, who was an unrelated NPC in the game.
Logan Foster
Is Karla the daughter of Alva and Zullie?
