Only been playing a few months, but I can try to answer you?

IJN are good for their tech tree CVs and most of the other ships are lacking in some way or another, Japanese torpedoes can be seen from space almost and there's numerous ways to detect torpedoes.

Americans get (mostly) pretty bad tech tree CVs but great premium ones, the stealthiest T10 battleship, the best AA and a range of other good ships in general.

Germans get a bunch of good ships with great side armour and shit deck armour, plus secondary gun memes with the Bismark. Crap AA though from what I've seen and their CV is guaranteed replies every time you play a game.

Russians get the best of all worlds because Russian bias, but only cruisers and destroyers to choose from.

British get something completely different and possibly the best T10 cruiser, only two ship lines to pick from though.

French cruisers are for cucks and people who hate themselves.

Strafe is around with manual drops, but only for T6 CVs and above.

You either buy Enterprise to play a proper USN CV or just go for IJN. As IJN CV you have Air Control, Spotting, fast recycling and damage.
As USN you either have air control but no damage, damage but no air control or 111 and good spotting while neither having good air control or damage.

A 222 loadout is just the best overall and downright better than 111.

That's right, the ship XP you earn with premium ships is stuck on the ship the same as XP you earn with elite ships. The advantage of premium ships is that you can use a captain on them which is specialised to a different ship of the same nation and his skills will work at full effectiveness even if he is undergoing retraining.

And I'm still a little confused about training and re-training in general. Can a captain only be trained in one ship at a time? I always thought they retained their training for each ship they've been on and could freely move around previous ships without having to retrain. I moved my North Carolina captain back to my New Mexico so I could participate in ranked, which didn't require any retraining, so I thought i was set. But then when the season was over I moved him back to my NC and it said he needed retraining.

How did that work? Was it because he earned a skill point while in the New Mexico?

Fires seem like a non-issue on the tier 9 and 10 with their super heal.

Japs focus on torps and have usually the lowest detectability.
Burgers focus on short range firepower and good smoke. Torps are very short range until tier 7.
Nazi botes get hydro at tier 6, mediocre torps, shitty smoke, and take extra damage form AP.
Commy line to khaba goes fast and shoots stuff, the other one trades firepower for torps and a bit of AA.
