Ok question, I understand the basics of do2a (warding, ground control, pulling, etc.) But I never seem to do well as a more supportey character. When I play someone like pa or specter i am an unkillable farmed gold wielding monster. On the other hand, playing someone like lich, i always get under leveled, have no farm, and die because i'm out by myself trying to ward or pull. I know i'm missing something but maybe i'm just better at carry?
tl;dr I'm not complete shit at carry and on supports I feel useless mid game.

Not dying as a squishy support is torture for nubs. Your team doesn't need a Lion or Lich THAT badly as long as someone is warding and babysitting. I'd strongly recommend playing support with heroes that can take a punch. Ogre Magi is one of the best noob heroes, but Venge, Abaddon and Omni are decent too. Also consider playing CM if you feel like you can depend on items for survival (Glimmer, Bracer, Atos, etc).

Learn how to position yourself properly, what is 1 right click from a lich going to do? Fuck all, so sit at the edge of spell range and only come in to cast or use utility items. When warding, check the map and if you're not 100% sure it's safe you might need to go in under smoke/glimmer or wait until there's a carry nearby. If you're underleveled you need to pull more, buy more tomes, rotate to gank/countergank more and not die in fights. Don't be afraid to farm jungle camps with your spells or ask a carry to weaken them for you. For Lich specifically, make sure you're using sacrifice as much as possible to make the most of the XP and remember that the big purple ancients have no magic resistance so you can safely clear them with a few frost blasts.
