Forest, Snow, Desert, and very rarely Clouds are all possible.

Personally, my favorite is an overhang cave Forest spawn. Keeps most enemies except eyes out for pre-hardmode and looks nice too.

Every shuttle-like ship shape just looks like shit from the side in 2D, and I'd have to make some weird combination of interior and exterior to make it work. Should I just build something else?

Space ships really struggle to look good in 2d yeah. Could try taking design inspiration from ocean creatures or something. Other than that, airships are always nice.
