It'll appeal a lot to extremely detached, mainstream audiences, but it doesn't appeal to me at all, because I'm not impressed by bloated animations that don't have any weight to them.

It's the same "it's HD so it's automatically better!" that somehow managed to appeal to a thankfully small number of SF fans for Street Fighter II HD remix. It doesn't, however, take a particularly trained eye to see that they're a wonky mess compared to the sprites they're intended to "improve". Sonic 2 HD isn't quite as bad as SFIIHDR, but it's repeating several of its failings.

I'm genuinely asking here, it doesn't look terrible by any means to me but it seems not many are big on the visual style. Why is that? Why would there be shortcomings from redrawing the sprites and making more fluid animations?

Only thing that needs a delay is the Switch version & that's if they don't fix the framerate issues before launch. In reality, unless there's major issues & glitches we don't know about yet on the other versions (& I'm not referring to the animation that's been par the course for Modern Sonic games since Unleashed), there's no real reason to delay it

I'm not any of the previous anons, but it does look a bit simplistic and off in terms of style. It doesn't look charming like the classic games and instead looks a bit soulless.

I don't mean to say it has to be a specific way since this is an unofficial, fan made game, but you asked for opinions.

The problem is that it's just the artistic version of resolution upscaling. Instead of creating new, high resolution sprites that are meant to look like what the original sprites were conveying, they took the old sprites, bumped up the resolution, and just filled them in with very generic shading. The result is that everything looks smooth and flat; there's no texture to any of the objects. If you want to see improved sprites done right, go look at the Duck Tales remake.

If you want soulless HD sprites, go look at the mobile 2D Final Fantasy remakes

So what else should they have done instead? We're coming up on the ultra HD era, we can't be stuck in the past forever, user. Sonic 2 Classic already exists if you want to play it.

They kept roughly the same color palette in the HD version and the drawing style matches the Sonic style from back then, so I can't think of anything else they could have done better. HD is great, more fps is objectively better than less fps. Don't let Hollywood/Disney fool you into thinking animation should only be done at 24 fps, the technology is there to give us more but they haven't moved on from that standard because they want to save money. It's not that 24 fps looks better, it's that everyone has just accepted it. You see way more fps in real life. 24 fps was because of limits on technology back then, just the way technology prevented devs from doing HD art in past games and why we were stuck with pixel art for a long time. Let's be real, if technology wasn;t an issue, we would have had HD graphics back the because pixel art looks like shit since you can't see anything. It's only a thing because of nostalgia. You watch youtube videos in the highest resolution/fastest fps possible, you don't settle for the lowest unless you can't afford fast internet.
