I'm an inexperienced office manager. Don't ask how it happened, it was luck. I found out that an employee was essentially faking work for the last 2 weeks, probably more. Confronting her tomorrow, does anyone want to give me any tips?

buy Lepen, of course

;) ;) ;) nnnaaaammm'sayyinnn?

This is a straight fire situation.

Just say "user, I know you have been pretending to work for the last 2 weeks"

Let them talk for a bit and get everything off their chest.

Then fire them.

Do you have proof?

Also maybe record the confrontation somehow or have your direct superior involved on the off-chance she tries to accuse you of some sort of misconduct towards her to save her own ass.

Best of luck user, you'll come to realize management is mostly just babysitting people.. high school never fucking ends.

Find a better position for your obviously smart and unmotivated employee. Take what they learned to ensure it either doesn't happen again, or incorporate it into your own duties.

I have undeniable proof. They were supposed to do some calls and I have the call logs showing that they dial and hang up immediately, pretending to be speaking on the phone because there are other people around.

I'm pretty sure this has less to do with her intellect and more to do with OPs lack of experience as a manager. She probably just saw an opportunity to slack off for awhile.

Kek, yeah you're gonna have to fire her. Don't be a dick about it or she might try and go to the labour board or something. Just explain the situation, present her with the proof if she asks for it and tell her she's fired

Get IT to cancel any login/password permission she may have beforehand.

You're right, I could've caught it earlier, I'm too naive but I'll do something properly for once and be ruthless. You're also right about recording the convo

What's more funny is there's a few other people doing the same job (properly) and when I show them appreciation for doing a good job, she was the one to take the most credit and joke about buying her lunch as a reward

Yes, make them feel bad about it before you fire them. By allowing them to put the blame on themselves, you can fire them with a low chance of repercussions.

Lol why would you even do that? That's more effort than even working.

>t. Posting at work

Take her into a meeting and bring someone to take notes. Present your evidence and ask her what she has been doing for the last two weeks

Fucking stacey's

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well.. like it would be easier to just make the calls than to sit there making up pretend conversations for two weeks

>can't make phone calls
>literally easiest job in the world
>easier than writing e-mails which require a lot of work to proofread

W E W

>pretending to be speaking on the phone because there are other people around.

yup. fired.

if you had more experience, this wouldn't even be an issue.

.... big caveat...

If she's black, IMO leave her alone.

Black women who do this shit at work will turn around and instantly play the race card on you without hesitation.

If she's black, take it to HR, let them handle it.

But OP, just to play the devils advocate
How do you know there isn't some technical glitch with your call logs? I.E, the computer system records that they made the call, but immediately quits recording for how long they have called. This kind of error can and does occur

You'll have to prove it wasn't a computer error with the call logs

This. Have HR confront her. HR bastards can screw you six ways till sunday

I thought that as well, so I asked her to do one more call for me today like a quick "favor". I could hear her speak and I could see on the admin console that there's no connection, I'm good with computers I am 100% certain and she's very PC illiterate so she wont even have the vocabulary to oppose me

You've gotten good advice itt
the only advice really.

I just wanted to stop in and let you know I laughed. At least 10 times a day I get calls from telemarketers that immediately hang up on me. This happens all the time.

Seriously, it's one thing if she was busy and missed a few for that reason. That's still bad but understandable and you could work with her. But making shit up? Fire that bitch.

I'm straight up mystified by the thought process here, what could be her excuse? What was her plan? How long had she been there? So many questions.

>what could be her excuse?
probably just sick of the abuse. OP's office is undoubtedly some scammy borderline-illegal shit for which his telemarketers get berated and insulted over and over and over and over....

>getting berated on the phone an excuse to not work
Try being a door to door salesperson

I'll provide updates tomorrow, now going to bed. Thanks to everyone for the advises.

She's been with us for a year

Bookmarked. You bumping this thread or making a new one?

It's a really good opportunity to show what kind of manager you are, if you fire someone people will come to take you seriously

Just bumping thread. I'll be doing the talk in 2 hours (still not started work).

I'm thinking of starting it very friendly and tell her that I'm looking for feedback on the project with the calls. I expect her to start complaining and then I'll change direction and pin her down

Alright just came across this just now and look forward to it good luck

Don't be a fake fuck just ask her why she faked the phone calls and tell her she has to find a new job. Bitch probably is too nervous to talk on phones so if anything, help sign for her anxiety diagnosis.

This is a good start to a porno.

Tip: Make sure this wasn't some technical error. If you fucked up and you're wrong then you're in deep shit.

Never have a negative performance review or 'offboarding' meeting alone, always bring someone from HR or someone on equal or higher standing than yourself as a witness.

Don't try and trap her with bs games because an employee that leaves will ALWAYS talk to their co-workers and tell them what an ass you are which can build resentment toward you in the team.

>Evidence
Speak to the people she was supposed to call and ask if they received a call, and follow up on how that call went but don't lead them in to answering anything just act as a 'follow up'.
Do this for more than just her so it can't be seen as targeting or singling someone out.

Call the lying bitch in and tell her you are concerned about mismatching records from follow up calls, let her dig her grave then either give her a last chance or fire her.

Long time manager here

1 - Make sure you have the written documentation with you with copies for everyone in the room.

2 - Make sure your HR is on board before you fire.

3 - Make sure you have HR or your supervisor in the firing meeting

4 - if you record, just say up front, "To make sure there is no future confusion, I will record this call." Then turn on recording and say, "(employee' name) Please state your name." Then "This conversation is being recorded. Do you understand this?" You dont need their permission (in most places, check to be sure) but in some places you do need to make them aware. Video recording is better.

4. If HR isnt on board yet, present the case, have a "remediation plan" ready for the employee to sign. Follow up daily. They will either fuck up again or quit.

5. Potential downside is some people call in sick and if you have a long term disability plan (unlikely for call center) they go on that while they look for another job.

6. When you fire, just make it as quick and dispassionate as possible. "(bad employee), we have documentation that you have been faking your calls." present documentation. "Becuse of this , we are terminating your employment. You have the option to resign, but I need to know right now. You need to sign this....and this...and this....Thank you. Now I need you to leave your badge here."

7. Have someone bring her purse or bag and coat or whatever to the meeting. "Here are you personal items. If we find anything else at your desk, where would you like us to mail them?"

8. No good bye, now best of luck. At this point you stand up and the rest of your interaction is with the HR person escorting them out.

This managementbro knows.

One experience i've made the hard way, always get in the HR and always have duly displayable proofs.

actually awful advice desu.

a lot of Veeky Forums is larping. i don't know why anyone would come here for advice

Damn life in a call center must suck ass, I bet there's a high suicide rate

OP here, probably a different ID. It went better than I expected.

I started off with a smile and asked her how she's doing, then led the conversation towards the call project. Bear in mind that this is just an occasional part of the work. Her job is to do something else but we got a client who wanted us to do some market research.
At the beginning I asked who wants to volunteer and she, along with other said they don't mind it much. Now I asked her for some feedback on the project, because I'm planning on giving feedback to the higher ups (I really will do this).
I luckily managed to make her comfortable and she went off with lots and lots of complaints about how stressful the project is and how people are being rude to her. She started detailing a particular case where some guy supposedly was trying to get her manager on the phone (me) but she 'saved' me the hassle and handled the situation.
At this point I just interrupted her with these exact words "our phone software has an admin console, where I can see very detailed information about everything related to calls"

Her voice dropped and she started grasping at straws. It was beautiful to see to be honest. She started going for the "I don't know how to use the program" card. I replied that she dialled 431 numbers and hung up on the first second, it's all logged.
Her whole presence shifted into a big and dissapointed "ok". She calmly asked "I don't want to cry and apologise, tell me what's next". I told her to go home today and we'll speak further on Monday. Now it's up to the higher ups.
Thank you for all the advices again anons, I grew a bit today.

Fire yourself

>employee has done nothing for 2 weeks and you only found out by luck

What exactly do you do? If her work was important it would have been noticed sooner.

Which means you're both irrelevant to the company and should both be fired.

not to mention he would handle his own phonecalls and not pass them off to someone without PR experience

>taking management advice from 19 year old shitcoiners

Well you're right. I'm naive enough to think that no one would be pretending to speak at the screen for hours every day. Now I know.
I never forced her the project, she was the first to volunteer

Is she hot? You can easily extort her for sex for the remainder of your job there.

In fact, if you let her know she's fired in your office she may offer herself.

This.

Bang her than fire her anyway, alpha af

Is she good at the rest of her job? If so, just write her up and assign her tasks she can actually do.

I'm sure everything will turn out just fine if you do this, OP.

Lol well you blew it. You dont have a backbone and wont make it too long. Your inexperience really showed.

Porn isn't real life, mouth-breather.

But here is your (you).

In most cases people getting tasks which they're not good at. Like said, get her some tasks she is comfortable with. Obviously cold calling for whatever isn't a task which most people would like.

Final verdict - She won't be coming back on Monday or ever, she has risked a client's contract and the company reputation.

>muh clients
Way to lose a decent employee over some scammer company that wanted 'market research." Sounds like you work at a real shithole

She lied and made up a story. That's not a decent employee

Lmao you are a really shitty manager, aren't you?

I would lie as well if my manager had less experience than me and was this dumb, lol.

Damn xD
So glad I work for the government and have pretended to work for the last 5 years getting automatic 4k raises every year with not even the possibility of getting fired.

So what it just shows she isn't a mindless idiot, at least she owned up to it eventually. Now that you had a strike against her you could have used that to your advantage

Don't listen to these faggots, mate. You gotta let the other ones know you mean business. Read Sun Tzu if you feel unsure.

>her
Shitcan time
