Since EUIV was suggested last thread, I think I WILL convert my Reddit Hugbox playthrough to EUIV once I make it to the end date. I'm curious to see what the world looks like in EUIV if basically all the cultures and religions from 769 start are preserved, strengthened, and united. Like, how the fuck does it treat all the East Slavs who blend into Russian if they stay un-mixed? (Severians, Ilemnians, etc.)

That coring unrest change sounds like a terrible idea. It takes time for province distance to calculate and money, monarch points, and savegame bloat if you want to do it manually. If the coring time is 20 years and the AI has to wait 5 years to even begin coring, that's at least 5 years of high unrest and no profitable gain for the province, then 20 years of no building construction or other improvements which could help to bring the province into the central administration more effectively. This again just sounds like a ham-fisted nerf to blobs which encourages situations like interior Europe with relatively small national states rather than large multi-ethnic federations like Russia, the Ottomans, or even many Indian states. Hell, this will fuck colonies over too, and they don't even have a choice in the distance of the land their overlord gives them. You're at least sentencing certain colonies in shit terrain, like Peru or Mexico, to unending spirals of overextension.

I also think HRE member states should only get institution spread in their capitals if Reichsreform and Reichsregiment is passed, since reasonably the HRE would need to be semi-centralized for any benefits to trickle down like that.

Part of the fun of the challenge will be keeping everyone in line and civilizing all the tribal and nomadic fuckers. I guess I'll start as Byzantium and make a beeline for Slav land, which will have the added benefit of making for an easy early reformation on their part.

Surprisingly, in my last Byzantium playthrough, the Slavs were relatively docile. As long as I kept my eye on revolt risk, and educated my heirs in Diplomacy, gaving them lots of good virtues via the "Teach Virtue" option from the monastic order societies, the whole realm was pretty stable. It helped to have loyal viceroy kings. Carousing focus lets you make friends so I just befriended them all, made sure I played a virtuous person, and everyone was pretty happy.

Actually that's exactly why I did it - with the province requiring 0 unrest before it is corable you can just spam the savegame bloat and pull an exploit where you pause the game before the modifiers are re-applied to the province, giving you no unrest to all of your province and therefor making all of them corable as soon as they're conquered. This change is intended to not force you to exploit like that and directly give you the ability to core them after Martial Law expires, at the expense of having to core them for twice longer (which is supposed to simulate you wasting time to reduce unrest)

And as for anything else you said, no, I actually ran a full campaign before releasing this and neither I nor the AIs had any problem expanding, but I as a player didn't have to spam exploits and bloat my save so I took it as a net positive. Also, removing the ability to core Terrible CE provinces is not a "ham-fisted nerf to blobs", it's actually quite realistic.

If any huge issue arises from any of those changes I'll just change it through a hotfix so don't worry about that either, just make sure to report it so I can examine it

Teach Virtue and Give Spiritual Advice were great to use on my viceroys too, because sharing virtues makes people like you more and less likely to start shit. When there WERE rebellions, from peasants or heretics for example, the viceroys squashed them pretty well by themselves.

I know I said before I didn't have much else to talk about, but I want to reopen the discussion I mentioned about nerfing major and unrealistically stable blobs in the AAR. Two threads back a few user brought up that the AI won't have the same penalties to expansionism that I'm giving myself, and we're quite likely to see either a Karling blob, Umayyad blob, or Abbasid blob in the game, not to mention what may eventually happen with the Seljuks or Mongols.

I absolutely don't want to prevent large realms from forming or from their being powerful and stable, but it should be difficult and there certainly should be challenges to it. I proposed two potential ways to resolve this which I would be willing to try, and I'm interested in feedback for the potential solutions.

The first option would be to do for the AI what I'm doing for myself, namely to narratively construct challenges for them. This could include, for example, forcing a bastard son of the Holy Roman Emperor to invade for his father's title, and simultaneously manually launching an independence rebellion for the HRE's far-flung vassalage. I could then turn to the situation in the HRE and explain what had happened, and perhaps even directly involve myself in the situation in some way. This would not create a death sentence for these large realms--they could still come out on top--but if they're seemingly too stable and facing too little threat as-is, these manual interventions can challenge them and give other realms opportunities to pounce.

The second option is a reconstruction of a project I began a long time ago to rebalance all traits, modifying the skill bonuses and nerfs they provide and, most importantly, changing opinion modifiers so characters with conflicting traits dislike each other much more. This encourages times of extreme stability as much as instability, which jacks up variance and makes "problem vassals" much more persistent a threat.

I think I'll see how well the AI can handle certain threats being arrayed against them when I do the test, but I'm still wondering whether I should see if the trait changes can do it on their own. I'll test both, I think, to see. Worst-case I can just manually press on over-mighty blobs.

Playing a Krakow to Commonwealth game in the last version of HPM. Its 1879 and I have everything I need from Russia. Germany is a fucking monster though in this game and even though I'm allied with France, France won't join any invasion of Germany because Germany is allied with Great Britain. Not that that possibly would even matter considering France for some reason in this game has stationed all of its forces outside of Europe (they have like 60,000 troops in fucking French Guyana but only 50,000 on the mainland). Austria Hungary is useless as an ally since I was forced to neuter them to form Poland. Whats the best strategy for dealing with Germany at this point? It will probably take two wars to take both Konigsberg (needed for the PLC decision) and the three states I have cores on, but at this point even with the ~5th largest army in the game I haven't had much luck trying to take on Germany alone.
