Patton

Anyone that doesn't think he was the greatest general to fight in the war is probably retarded

He was good, but he was severely hampered by false belief that the lives of his men were worth caring about. Based Zukhov had no such weakness. If he encountered a minefield, he ordered his soldiers to attack as if it weren't even there, and if he saw somebody so much as glance downward to look for mines he'd shoot them himself and then throw the poor bastard onto a landmine just to set an example.

>implying

>outruns supply lines and repeatedly outflanked

ummmmmm

What was so noteworthy about him apart from his funny speeches and ostentatious manner?

Its impossible to compare generals across 3 thousand years of military history.

And don't think better technology makes it any easier or harder

He's talking about WW2.
Napoleon was better than Robert E Lee.

it's noteworthy that he was assassinated by his own people for trying to expose some sort of cover up

>USA! USA!

I would have liked to see Rommel and Patton go head to head with equal amount of equipment and men. My money is on Rommel. This video will make you a bit nostalgic for the "bad guys" skip to the end if you want to see the good stuff

Now that's one shitty video. Opening with how Germany is facing a crisis and then cutting to videos from failed states like Britain and their sandpeople population chimping out

>failed states like Britain

t.Europoor

He was the granddaddy of armoured warfare and combined arms, Patton had discovered blitzkrieg before the Germans even had a tank force and he brought about revolutionary changes in the American army

Nathan Bedford Forrest created blitzkrieg

Ahem

Patton is famous for the same reason Bastogne is, it's where the war reporters were, not that it was particularly unique.

just waiting itt to see if any brits reply with the shittiest tactician and strategist of the modern era, Monty.

we have our own hero

retarded? no

military genius? no as well

He graduated 46th out of 103 at West Point, making him an average officer at best to start.

What makes him notable is that he's sort of a Heinz Guderian of the US, a pioneer in armored warfare and advocate in using tanks as a spearhead to break enemy lines, rather than having them move along with infantry as support.

Patton was a douche; a gloryhound and a pretentious prick.
His unwarranted obsession with pushing into Bavaria instead of going north through Westphalia was a disaster, and he consistently insisted on fucking over Montgomery every time he had the chance for no good reason whatsoever; resulting in further losses of time and ressources.

Amd that on parity of conditions (numbers, air support, logistics, etc) he would have been totally BTFO by Guderian, Rommel, Manstein, Rundstedt, Leeb, etc. Probably even by Keitel.

> "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country"

At least he had great quotes

Is Patton a meme general?

Slim was a lot better than him.

I thought Bastogne was the largest encirclement of allied troops? Seems pretty significant.

My favourite moment of Patton was when he said that people who dies during war are fools

During a memorial

For his own army

Yes.

They were only surrounded for four days while fighting at Saint Vith and Elsenborn lasted considerably longer and was arguably more important, that Bastogne was reported on out of proportion had more to do with journalists being in the area due to amenities.

So Patton was more Zhukov than Zhukov?

Just the opposite:
"No bastard ever won a war by making some other poor dumb bastard die for his country. He won it by dying for his country." -- Zhukov.

I will never defend Monty, all he did was blunder around Holland living off the success of North Africa. But he knew he was too popular with the people at home to ever be replaced so kept insulting the US commanders.

But how would he know where the landmines were if he didn't let anyone search for them.

>confuses von Manstein with Rommel

>Anyone that does think he was the greatest general to fight in the war is probably retarded

fixed that for you.

he wasnt the best general to fight in the war, he wasnt the best general to fight for the allies (Slim) he wasnt the best to fight in europe, he is only arguably even the best american general of the war.

his only claim at best is 'best self publicist' and 'best post war biopic and subsequent hagiography'

far from true, his only real blunder was arnhem, and even that was a relatively small loss for potentially massive gains, in the meantime Hodges lost 30k casualties trying to push through a forest he could easily have bypassed.

battles like the normandy campaign and his response to the ardennes offensive as well as his rhine crossing operation and the clearing of the reichswald showed him to be a skilled and effective general
