EU4 is neither balanced nor historical. If you want it to be historical you need mods. If you want it to be balanced, play a different game.

I don't know, because I'm not a 19th century American, but I imagine little things like "steer right", and "straight ahead" being used colloquially in the South and the North demanding it be "turn right"and "continue straight."

I know it doesn't seem like much, but in such an environment of cultural conflict such little things could be a source of tension.
